CABARET LIFE NYC: Watching Some 'Angels' Take Wing and Other Observations From a Cabaret Summer
by Stephen Hanks - Sep 6, 2013

One of the biggest downers perpetrated by American culture is the characterization of Labor Day weekend as the 'unofficial end of summer.' But given what has passed for cabaret entertainment-at least the shows I was able to attend--since the 'unofficial start of summer' on Memorial Day weekend, the end of summer can't come soon enough. But my dismay over the hours lost watching average shows this season was tempered a bit by the pride and joy I felt watching the June performances of three strikingly attractive and talented 30ish brunettes with powerhouse voices-- Jackie Kristel, Karen Gross and Jodi Beck, who all staged entertaining shows as spring was turning to summer. by BWW News Desk - Oct 15, 2013

'Open' follows the meteoric rise of Compaq, from humble beginnings to worldwide PC industry leadership in just over a decade, all the while dodging life threatening attacks from IBM and a host of low price competitors. Just four years after the 'open industry standard' began, it was so dominant that the combined market share of Compaq, IBM and a few dozen compatibles was over 75%, and Apple was relegated to a niche. When the PC industry appeared to be capitulating to IBMs scheme to end the 'open standard,' only Compaq resisted, and continued to pursue a tactic to stop them. The solution they came up with surprised everyone, especially IBM, and led to an industry rebellion that weakened IBM to the point that Compaq was able to surpass them. (more...)

AMERICAN IDOL Recap: David Cook Mentors Top-8 to Fresh Takes on 80's Hits (Updated with Pictures)
by Matt Tamanini - Apr 9, 2014

Just as it did last week, tonight's AMERICAN IDOL featured the Top-8 finalists. After an ill-advised use of the sole judge's save, Sam Woolf remained in the competition long enough to be mentored by former IDOL champ David Cook for this week's 80's theme. With the obvious negligence of 'full-time' mentor Randy Jackson, it is staggering to see how much progress can be made with a mentor who is actively engaged in helping the finalists become better singers, performers, and artists. AMERICAN IDOL Preview: Check Out Top-8's Song Choices for Tonight's '80's Week'
by Matt Tamanini - Apr 9, 2014

When last we left our Season XIII AMERICAN IDOL finalists, an uncomfortable amount of confetti was raining down on 17-year-old Sam Woolf, who had survived America's vote by garnering the season's only judge's save. As the show went off the air host Ryan Seacrest informed us that Top-8 Week Part 2 would focus on the songs of the 1980s. Again, first-year Executive Producer Per Blankens has opted to give the contestants an extremely open-ended theme. Thus far, the strategy has proved beneficial for audiences and Idols alike, as both have been exposed to songs outside the normally limited Reality Show set-list. (more...)

BWW Reviews: VIVIAN REED Signs, Seals and Delivers a Soulful and Powerful Performance at 54 Below
by Stephen Hanks - Apr 3, 2014

In the late '70s, Vivian Reed captured a Tony Award nomination and won a Drama Desk Award for her work in the Broadway musical Bubbling Brown Sugar, and although Reed has delivered some critically-acclaimed work in the many years since (a Tony nomination for the 1992 musical The High Rollers Social and Pleasure Club and a star turn in the revue Three Mo' Divas), during the last decade she had gone and stayed away too long, mainly to take care of her ailing mother. Last November, she dipped a toe in the New York nightclub waters, producing a one-night show at 54 Below that was highly praised and offered hints of great things to come. But this past Monday night—the first of what will ultimately be a four-show run of “An Evening With Vivian Reed” (the next three dates are April 14, May 20 and June 19)—this performing powerhouse established her return in earnest. With Reed's still expressive voice tackling musical genres ranging from R & B to Jazz to Great American Songbook standards to Gospel (even a dash of Opera), her electric and passionate show was cabaret/nightclub performing as revival meeting in more ways than one. Reed is not only reviving her singing career, she is inspiring impassioned converts at the same time. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Baz Luhrmann's STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL
by Emma Cambey - Apr 13, 2014

"A life lived in fear is a life half lived" or so say the characters of Strictly Ballroom in both the musical and the 1992 original film. Anyone who has ever seen anything created by Baz Luhrmann would agree that Baz never does anything by halves and he is certainly fearless. To take one of your most popular and iconic films and turn it into a stage musical requires courage and a whole lot of confidence and creativity, none of which Baz Luhrmann lacks. The resulting musical, which opened Saturday night, is one that will please and entertain fans of the iconic film and will also create a new generation of fans of the story in its new form.
