Next up on its Main Stage, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey presents the Bard's epic pageant play Henry VIII. Centered around the tug-of-wars between church and state and husband and wife, the play culminates in the birth of England's future Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare's great patron and Henry's fierce and very female heir. Performances begin October 15 at the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, 36 Madison Avenue in Madison. Tickets start at $25 for preview performances and $32 for regular performances. Student rush tickets for all performances are $15, available a half-hour before curtain for with a valid student ID. Performances are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. For tickets, call the Box Office at 973-408-5600 or visit www.ShakespeareNJ.org. Lantern Theater Company will open its 21st season with a production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard in an extended five-week run from September 25 - November 2, 2014. To coincide with this production, the Lantern will also present In Arcadia: Celebrating Tom Stoppard's Masterpiece, a four-day festival featuring a panel discussion about the play's rich and varied themes with Stoppard expert Toby Zinman, a high tea, special performances of some of Stoppard's rarely-performed short works, and other experiential events from October 23 - 26. It's London, 1879, and The Explorers Club is in crisis. A woman has been proposed for membership! The members of this venerable club are in shock-who could imagine such a thing? What's really needed here is a good stiff drink, but unfortunately, they have the worst bartender in all of London. And this is just the beginning of the hijinks in Nell Benjamin's The Explorers Club, a co-production with WaterTower Theatre, beginning its 6-week Stage West run on Friday, November 28. Burbage Theatre Company is proving to be a gem of a small company. Last season's "The Liar" was one of the funnier, tighter, and most professional shows I saw all of last year, and this Spring's production of "Orson's Shadow" by Austin Pendleton is every bit as good. The show is the 2nd in a shortened, 3-play season BTC is staging at the Artists' Exchange in Cranston, bookended by the recently closed "Doctor Cerberus" and the about to open "The Bald Soprano," by Eugene Ionesco. The Book Club will focus on titles that relate to the themes being shown on the Gulfshore Playhouse stage throughout the season. From October 2014 to April 2015, he Gulfshore Playhouse will focus on 6 books, with one meeting to discuss each book. This saucy update of Moliere's The Misanthrope by Tony Award-nominated David Ives (Venus in Fur) stuffs contemporary off-color slang into the classic baroque farce, in which rivals scheme romance to expose a notorious cynic. A few cunning lies set party girl Celimene and acerbic wit Frank up for battle and sex. Misbehavior, gossip, glamour and scandal reign in this clowning burlesque written in rhymed couplets. A Tony nominee for Best Play, Time Stands Still is a witty, intelligent examination of the power of war against the backdrop of the homefront. Sarah and James, a photographer and a journalist, share a passion for the adrenaline rush that comes from reporting stories in the world's deadliest war zones. When the realities of combat become too much for James, a rift begins to form between them. After Sarah is wounded in a bomb blast in Iraq, she is forced to return home to James and the safety, and comparative boredom, of New York. Her struggle to adapt to life in the States is contrasted with the life of her mentor, Richard, who is happily embarking on a more conventional path with a much younger woman. (more...)
