Glee-Cap: Dynamic Duets.
by Robert Lawlor - Nov 22, 2012

What's that? Is it a bird? No, it's not Thanksgiving Turkey taken flight! Is it a plane?! No, it's SUPERGLEE! Able to leap high notes and iTunes charts in a single bound, faster than a locomotive, and full of harmony power! Rise up, Glee Super Friends! It's a call to battle, SuperGleeks! Up, up, and a-Glee-way! Blaine leads a meeting of the Superhero Club, only to have the meeting throttled by crisis in Gleeville! Shock, wham, kaboom! Seems the New Directions Nationals trophy has been stolen! What fiend would do such a thing?! The voice of a shadow faced blazer wearing villain taunts and Night Bird (also known as Blaine) goes to Dalton to get the the trophy back from the clutches of the dastardly dapper boys known as the Warblers. However, the villain is not the former foe, Sebastian (Grant Gustin), but a new villain - the not even bi-curious new captain, Hunter Carrington (Nolan Gerard Funk) who taunts Blaine with a return to the Warblers, leading Blaine to perform 'Dark Side' by Kelly Clarkson, which could spell doom for our mighty hero! Nothing more tragic than a superhero turned super villain! In the midst of all the superhero shenanigans, Finn is struggling in his new role as glee club advisor, and decides to take a page from the current obsession with superheroes and use it in glee club - this week's theme: Dynamic Duets! Kitty takes it upon herself to pick a song for herself and Marley, but Marley isn't so sure working with her arch nemesis is such a good idea. Two bitter foes, Ryder and Jake, locked in battle over the lovely Marley's affections take to the glee club floor with 'I Am Superman' and ends up being anything but super the heroes turn foes and down and break out in a fight. Wham! Thus, the mighty Treble Clef (Finn) takes the wannabe heroes and forces them to get some kryptonite on each other to get to know each other better and turn from friend to foe. (more...)

SOUND OFF: SMASH Flies The Coup
by Pat Cerasaro - Mar 27, 2012

Sporadically shedding its former skin as a mainly musical endeavor, last night's "The Coup" episode of NBC's musical dramedy series SMASH stepped outside the box and presented a drama-focused show heavy on the plot and light on the musical numbers - with surprisingly strong results, believe it or not. As has become abundantly apparent, in the seven episodes up until this point, SMASH seems to have excelled in its musical sequences which floated high, flying, adored (like Eva Peron in EVITA) above everything else; enlivening the proceedings where the story fell short - usually, with Ivy (Megan Hilty) dominating the Marilyn Monroe show-within-the-show songs and Karen (Katharine McPhee) making the very most of an impressive melange of pop covers - but, as penned by Scott Burkhardt and directed by GLEE veteran Paris Barclay, "The Coup" showed that SMASH has legs and can sustain a character/plot-focused story from time to time, too. And, anyway, it's hard to complain too much about a lack of songs when we were presented with perhaps the most unique and stylized pop musical number to date in the form of the Top 40-ready Ryan Tedder-written potential Marilyn burlesque routine - that is, if Derek (Jack Davenport) takes the show-within-the-show in an entirely new direction and leaves Tom (Christian Borle) and Julia (Debra Messing) by the wayside. That potential prospect seems highly unlikely, though - to say the very, very least. Speaking of high, "The Coup" flew The Coop as far as daring to do what many may have thought unlikely or impossible - namely, weaving in almost seamless, fully-integrated musical sequences such as Ivy & company's down and dirty bowling alley cover song set to the funky 60s sounds of Sly & The Family Stone's "Dance To The Music", or, (almost) effortlessly managing to make a contemporary song in a musical theatre milieu actually function (more or less) and come alive in the form of the sexy and titillating 'Touch Me'. Yes, "The Coup" stylistically diverged from what has come before on SMASH, but the more risks taken, the more rewards reaped. Definitely don't count all the eggs in the SMASH basket before they're hatched! (more...)

BWW Reviews: Enjoy a Hilarious, Cock-Eyed Norway at Washington Stage Guild's ELLING

When we think of Norway, "laugh riot" is usually the last thing that comes to mind. The Washington Stage Guild's premiere production of Elling may be slow going at first, but it revs up to give you an amusing slice of life in modern-day Oslo. It's a very funny place indeed. This Elling is a classic comedy in the Odd Couple mode. Think: Neil Simon meets Sigmund Freud, with a healthy dose of Ken Kesey thrown in. (more...)
