BWW Blog: Arielle Jacobs - Flying High, Down Under: Part 7: The First Time is the Hardest
by Guest Blogger: Arielle Jacobs - Sep 16, 2016

It's days like this that I wish someone would just tell me what to do. Tell me what the rules are. Or guidelines. Whatever they're called. As I sit here, bundled up in my comfy clothes and Steaming my face, I sit in the knowledge that I'm battling a cold. My neck aches and my ears have been clogged for days. My nose is leaking BEHIND my face. Not out the front, but down back my throat.  The kind of drip down your throat that is just annoying and makes you feel like you've got a sore throat in the morning, but then you drink water and realize it's just the constant drip of liquid making your throat slowly raw. While there are always rumors of closings and real estate transactions happening willy-nilly, Chaffin's Barn continues to thrive and to entertain and to give both audiences and theater folk an opportunity to get to know one another better and to be transported and transformed via the magic of live theater. Chefs from Benchmark Resorts & Hotels Offer New Takes On an American Autumnal Culinary Classic, Chili!
by BWW News Desk - Nov 1, 2016

Chili. It's comfort food with a kick - a creation of chuck wagon cooks to fuel cowboys along the cattle trail. A Steaming 'bowl of red' is the official dish of Texas, and the Lone Star State traces its origins to the legendary Mexican Chili Queens of San Antonio who lined the city's plazas with pots of homemade chili. Chuck wagon chefs were said to have planted small gardens of herbs, onions and peppers along the cattle trail to ensure a steady supply of ingredients. The meat in the stew could include whatever was available - beef, buffalo, jackrabbit and even armadillo. Outlaws loved it - Frank and Jesse James spared the local bank in the town where their favorite chili parlor stood. (more...)

BWW Interview: Tech Talk with Dresser Paula Gilbert
by Frank Benge - May 9, 2016

Anytime you see a tour of a Broadway show, the talent happening right before your eyes is just the tip of the Broadway iceberg. Lurking behind the scenes is a whole crew of insanely gifted folks who also contribute to the spectacle on stage. One of those people is Paula Gilbert, who works here in Austin as a dresser for tours that come to Austin. They are called quick changes for a reason. At most touring shows, there's a crew of dressers running around backstage with a needle and thread in their pockets for last-minute repairs and safety pins clipped to their sleeves. There are ensemble dressers, who attend to a large group of people, holding up pants while chorus members step into them and swiftly shoving shoes onto feet. Then there are star dressers, who only focus on a leading player. We talked to Paula to find out what she does, why she loves it and how she keeps calm and collected when things go seriously wrong. BWW Review: The Roxy Regional Theatre's AMERICAN IDIOT is Electrifyingly Immersive
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 10, 2016

As exhilaratingly in-your-face as only the very best of contemporary theater can deliver, Green Day's American Idiot - now onstage in a startlingly emphatic and exuberant production at Clarksville's Roxy Regional Theatre - exemplifies just how far the company itself has come since its beginnings as a community theater. Now, serving as a training ground for some of the very best of musical theater stars-to-come, The Roxy has more than come into its own, continuing to push the envelope, to challenge audiences to expand their artistic purview and to create theater that is as compelling as any you'll find on a stage anywhere in the good ol' US of A. BWW Interview: Michael Innocenti & Eleanor J. Todd of PARADE at Keegan Theatre

When PARADE opened on Broadway in 1998, it was a historical musical drama based on a true story about anti-semitism and racism in the post Civil-War South. Nearly 20 years later, it has become a stark reminder of times we may not want to return to, but our front pages seem to be repeating. BWW Interview: PHANTOM's Ali Ewoldt Discusses the Challenges of Christine, Asians on Broadway and Her Solo Debut at Feinstein's/54 Below
by MATTHEW BLANK - Mar 10, 2017

Over the years, as we all orbit in the same Broadway Asian community, I got to know Ali Ewoldt and see her perform various roles, including Carrie in CAROUSEL, Tuptim in THE KING AND I, and Luisa in THE FANTASTICKS. Always happy to be supporting part of the Tribe and seeing someone who looked like me starring in these iconic shows, it became evident that Ewoldt possesses one of the most pristine soprano voices out there today. I knew that it would only be a matter of time before her next big Broadway break, and that brings us to today. She stars as Christine in the long-running mega-hit THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and will be making her solo debut at Feinstein's/54 Below with FROM PHANTOM TO PHANTOM on March 12. Ahead of the show, Ewoldt was kind enough to take time to answer a few questions for us. (more...)

BWW Review: ELF - THE MUSICAL Jingles into OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Dec 26, 2016

Upon learning that part of Segerstrom Center for the Arts' holiday programming this season was to finally bring a national tour production of ELF - THE MUSICAL---the 2010 Broadway stage musical adaptation of the popular Will Ferrell holiday movie---to its stage, I was pretty ecstatic. For the most part, ELF---which performs at SCFTA through January 1, 2017---delivers enjoyable laughs sprinkled here and there throughout its two acts, and even offers up a non-equity cast equipped with lovely singing voices. But while ELF - THE MUSICAL is certainly festive and has lots of smile-inducing moments, overall, I felt the presented production felt surprisingly subdued. While, sure, it had plenty of genuinely funny and heart-warming moments, many aspects of the NETworks Presentations production needed to be much more over-the-top, manic, and downright silly. BWW Review: Complexity and Cunning Appear in APT's Extraordinary ARCADIA
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Aug 15, 2016

Could life be portrayed similar to a Steaming cup of tea that eventually grows cool, and finally stone cold? That premise represents one possible physical property of energy, specifically heat, in Tom Stoppard's 1993 play titled Arcadia. At American Players Theatre (APT) Up the Hill stage, Stoppard's contemporary, complex and cunning production poses the duality to life and questions theoretical polar opposites such as order versus chaos. In this absorbing and provocative play where the heat of romantic love interferes with life's scientifically charted course, where the unpredictable and predetermined meet, this APT cast features excellent poetic form when playing what Stoppard also contemplated: 'It is a defect of God's humour that he directs our hearts everywhere but to those who have a right to them.'
