Producing Artistic Director Gwendolyn Whiteside and American Blues Theater, Chicago's second oldest Equity ensemble, are proud to announce the first production in American Blues Theater's "Legends and Legacies" season, Hank Williams: Lost Highway, by Randal Myler and Mark Harelik, directed by Damon Kiely, music director Malcolm Ruhl and starring Matt Brumlow as "Hank Williams," August 30 - October 6, at the Greenhouse Theater Center's Downstage Mainstage Theater, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. Tickets are $19 for previews, $29 Thursdays and Fridays and $39 Saturdays and Todays and $49 for opening night. Virginia Repertory Theatre celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern with a production of Steel Magnolias featuring an all-star cast. The show opens on Friday, July 12, 2013 at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, and runs through August 25, coinciding with the official anniversary on August 1. Sixty years ago in 1953, six actors, two children, a dog and two pigs moved into a historic ruin called Hanover Tavern. The transplanted New Yorkers founded Central Virginia's first professional theatre and named the company in memory of a deceased college friend, Barbara Barksdale. (more...)

Cumberland County Playhouse and its producing partner The SCOPES FESTIVAL, in Dayton, TN, have added three more performances of FRONT PAGE NEWS, the newly adapted, historically accurate play with music, opening Friday July 18 in the historic "monkey trial" courtroom in Dayton's Rhea County Courthouse. Additional shows of the new work are on Saturday, July 26 at 2:30 and 7:30pm, and the final show on Sunday, July 27 at 2:30 pm (All times are EDT). Virginia Rep's TARTUFFE to Open 2/13

Virginia Repertory Theatre announces the opening of Molie?re's clever comedy, Tartuffe, at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, 114 West Broad Street on Friday, February 14 with a preview on Thursday, February 13. The show runs through March 9, 2014. This year marks the 350th anniversary of the first production of this world classic in 1664. Molie?re, often considered the first great playwright of the Enlightenment, used his growing play audience and Tartuffe to exploit the hypocrisy of the church leaders who at the time controlled 20% of the French economy. After debuting for King Louis XIV at Versailles, Tartuffe was banned for six years on the demand of the clergy. The story of Tartuffe, a religious hypocrite, who uses his connections to swindle his generous host, Orgon, out of his wealth, home and wife, has long been considered a comic masterpiece. This production of Tartuffe is part of the Acts of Faith Theatre Festival. (more...)

Beginning September 12, Cumberland County Playhouse promises audiences a devilishly good time as they present Damn Yankees, the Tony Award-winning musical that's all about America's favorite pastime, baseball! Middle-aged Joe Boyd (Jim Crabtree) will do anything to see his beloved Washington Senators win the pennant-even sell his soul to the Devil. So when charming Mr. Applegate (Jason Ross) offers him the chance to dethrone the Yankees and lead his team to the pennant, Joe can't resist the temptation. But when transformed into the baseball sensation of the year, young Joe Hardy (Blake Graham) must decide if the life he gave up is more important than youth and fame. On August 22, Cumberland County Playhouse will present Ron Murphy & Lauren Marshall: From A(udra) to Z(eppelin), a one night only concert with one of the most eclectic music mixes you've ever heard. Producer Jim Crabtree came up with the idea for the concert when he heard Ron and Lauren performing some jazz tunes in the lobby. Said Lauren Marshall, "Jim approached us about doing a concert that would showcase the many different genres of music we enjoy. Ron and I both enjoy Zep; who doesn't? I'm a huge fan of that whole musical genre - The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones. We thought, why not try to adapt the guitar-heavy sound of Led Zeppelin into our style (which for this concert includes a grand piano, keyboard, drums and bass)?
