BWW Review: JUAN SIDDI FLAMENCO SANTA FE– Gitano (Gyspy) Flavors of Steps, Sights, and Sounds
by Marsha Volgyi - Mar 28, 2016

On Tuesday, March 22, 2016, Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe performed at The Joyce Theater. Earlier in the evening, I spotted three of their dancers a few blocks from the theater. It was quite easy to recognize them as dancers by their bun, make-up, and by their stature. So, I introduced myself and wished them 'merde' (a French word used by dancers for good luck). The three told me that they were excited to perform and explained the history of flamenco, both the music and the choreography. It was a spontaneous and an enlightening encounter-pre-show. While waiting for the performance to begin, I was glad to see that a large group of teens were in attendance. This gives me hope that our youth are still interested in watching live performances rather than relying on social media videos of trivial importance. The previous chance meeting combined with the adolescents in the theater started the night on a positive note for me. (more...)

BWW Review: ABT's LE CORSAIRE Transcends Time & Space
by Christina Pandolfi - Jun 3, 2016

At its best, classical ballet has the ability to utterly transfix, bending the boundaries of what we as human beings think is possible. With every gravity-defying grand jete and blossoming developpe, dancers transform into otherworldly beings, physicalizing that which can't be believed. At the 2016 Spring Season premiere of American Ballet Theatre's Le Corsaire, the company did just this, mesmerizing the audience and showcasing their ability to create a unique world of beauty, unto its own. BWW Dance Review: Alessandra Ferri Melts Our Hearts in ROMEO AND JULIET
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 24, 2016

Halfway through the bedroom scene (Act III, Scene I) I thought to myself, 'They're playing the music too quickly!' I was wrong. The tempo was fine; it simply felt faster than normal because the dancing was so wonderful. It's to be expected. Alessandra Ferri was guest starring in American Ballet Theatre's production of Kenneth MacMillan's 'Romeo and Juliet' nine years after she'd retired from the company in the same role. (more...)

BWW Review: CARNIVAL is a Dazzling Magical Delight
by Frank Benge - Aug 12, 2016

CARNIVAL is a musical that originally appeared on Broadway in 1961, with a book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Bob Merrill. You may better know Merrill as the writer of the lyrics for Funny Girl. It is based on the 1953 MGM film Lili. The show is seldom produced; outside of the original production's National Tour; only a handful of productions have been done professionally, and one of those was a staged concert version. The main reason is the difficulty of the music. I am pleased to report that not only does the Summer Stock Austin production handle the score beautifully, the entire production is a dazzling, magical delight. (more...)
