Ford's Theatre Announces LINCOLN LEGACY PROJECT Events, Sept-Oct 2013

Paul R. Tetreault, Director of Ford's Theatre Society, announced the special event schedule for the third year of The Lincoln Legacy Project-this year thematically connected with the Society's production of the stage play The Laramie Project (September 27-October 27, 2013), and recognizing the 15 years since Matthew Shepard was abducted and killed in an anti-gay hate crime in Laramie, Wyoming. The multi-year Lincoln Legacy Project encourages people of differing viewpoints to engage in meaningful and respectful dialogue about diversity and understanding through a range of programming including performances, panel discussions, special museum exhibitions, education programs and more. This fall, Ford's presents The Laramie Project to spark conversation about social injustice, bigotry, bullying and violence against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, and to take steps toward understanding, inclusion and equality. Ford's Theatre Announces Shutdown Update, New LARAMIE PROJECT Schedule; Sets Vigil for 10/11

Due to the government shutdown, Ford's Theatre Society (FTS) has relocated several performances of 'The Laramie Project' to First Congregational United Church of Christ (945 G Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001) between October 9 and 15, 2013. The 2 p.m. October 13 performance of 'The Laramie Project' has been cancelled. Patrons who had purchased tickets to performances October 9 through 15 at Ford's Theatre will be contacted by their point of purchase to exchange into performances at the church. All remaining tickets for performances at the First Congregational United Church of Christ are $25. (more...)

The Society has found an alternative space to present two free performances of the play The Laramie Project while the National Historic Site is closed during the government shutdown. Performances are today, Oct. 4, and Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ (945 G Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001), only a block away from Ford's Theatre. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Free tickets will be distributed on site on a first-come basis. Horse Trade Theater Group will present RadioTheatre and their original, live, audio-theatre adaptation by Dan Bianchi of Meet John Doe, Frank Capra's 1940 Oscar nominated classic, which starred Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. The story takes place in NYC at Christmas time during the Depression, when America's economy is at an all-time low. In order to sell papers, a reporter's fraudulent story turns a tramp into a national hero and makes him a pawn of wealthy businessmen who wish to create a third political party and take over the country. Meet John Doe will be performed complete with a great cast of storytellers, an original orchestral score and a plethora of sound effects. (more...)

Asolo Repertory Theatre will open its 2013-2014 season with SHOW BOAT, based on the novel by Edna Ferber, music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. This winner of the 1994 Tony Award for best revival features a score of timeless classics, including 'Ol' Man River, 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man' and 'Make Believe.' THE HINTERLANDS, a free musical web series about teenage gay bullying, officially launched on October 28, 2013 at a special event held at The New 42nd Street Studios. At the event, special guest speaker James Clementi of The Tyler Clementi Foundation shared some touching words about his younger brother Tyler and underscored the importance of being a light for young people who were struggling with thoughts of suicide. Connor Russell (Disney's Aladdin world premiere), star of THE HINTERLANDS, performed "Like It Here," a song from the fifth episode of the series. Katie Thompson (GIANT), backed by 13 students from the Professional Performing Arts School in Midtown, sang "Worthy," which will be part of the sixth episode of THE HINTERLANDS. Ford's Theatre Society announced that a donation drive during performances of "A Christmas Carol" has raised $77,413.42 for the local charity Covenant House Washington. Donations were collected November 21-December 23, 2013. In addition to the curtain call collection, patrons also were encouraged to make donations through the Ford's Theatre Box Office, and members of the Ford's Theatre Society staff donated money to the campaign.
