Music Director Jacques Lacombe and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra open the NJSO's 2014-15 concert season October 10-12 with Orff's Carmina Burana in Newark, New Brunswick and Morristown. The concert opens with New Jersey composer George Antheil's McKonkey's Ferry as part of both the NJSO's New Jersey Roots Project and NJ350--a celebration of the Garden State's 350th anniversary in 2014. Stephen Costello looks forward to a number of important firsts in 2014-15. Besides creating the role of Michele in San Francisco Opera's world premiere production of Two Women, the Tucker Award-winning tenor returns to the Metropolitan Opera for a pair of house role debuts, reprising his star turn as Alfredo -- also seen this season at the Vienna State Opera -- in La Traviata, and singing Camille in Susan Stroman's new staging of The Merry Widow. He makes his professional role debut as Ferrando in Così fan tutte at Houston Grand Opera, and house debuts at both Austin Lyric Opera, in the title role of a new Roméo et Juliette, and London's Wigmore Hall, where he launches the season with a solo recital in the prestigious Rosenblatt Series. Costello also joins his wife, soprano Ailyn Pérez, for romantic duets from their recent hit album, Love Duets, with the BBC Symphony at London's Barbican Hall, and on a U.S. duo recital tour to the opera houses of Washington, Dallas, San Diego, and Philadelphia. Guitar virtuoso Adam del Monte presents an exclusive benefit concert for Center Stage Opera on Saturday, Sept. 6, 3 pm, at Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church, 10000 Sepulveda Blvd. in Mission Hills. Adam del Monte is a guitarist whose blinding virtuosity electrifies audiences wherever he performs. Born in Israel, del Monte grew up in Malaga and Granada, Spain. His father was his first guitar teacher, and, at age 7, he spent two months living with a gypsy family in the caves of Sacromonte in Granada, surrounded by the sights and sounds of gypsy music and dance. Today, he is recognized around the world as an amazing performer, composer and teacher. In recent years, Candelas Guitars has unveiled the Adam del Monte models of classical and flamenco guitars. Opera San José (OSJ) continues its season with Gioachino Rossini's The Italian Girl in Algiers. This sparkling and fast-paced opera weaves a madcap story full of twists and turns into a comic adventure to a land of magnificent palaces, swashbuckling pirates and lavish harems. The Italian Girl in Algiers will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Anna Netrebko sings her first North American performances of the charismatic villainess of Verdi's Macbeth this season, in starry cast that also includes Željko Lu?i? as Macbeth, Joseph Calleja as Macduff, and René Pape as Banquo. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi will lead all seven performances of the opera, which opens September 24 in a revival of noted Shakespeare director Adrian Noble's 2007 production. The October 11 matinee performance will launch the ninth season of the Met's Live in HD series when it is transmitted worldwide to more than 2,000 movie theaters in 68 countries around the world. Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra to Perform at Severance Hall, 10/7

For the first time in their 91-year history, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, “one of the leading European orchestras” (The Independent), will tour the U.S., visiting four major markets in October. The Orchestra, under the direction of its Chief Conductor Muhai Tang, will appear first at Symphony Hall in Chicago on October 6th, then at Severance Hall in Cleveland on October 7th, at Strathmore Music Center in North Bethesda, MD on October 8th, and at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium in New York City on October 9th. The ensemble will bring two programs on tour, performing repertoire ranging from Khachaturian to Tchaikovsky to Sibelius. At Severance Hall and the Strathmore Center, the Orchestra will add a ballet suite by Stevan Hristi?, a founder and first principal conductor of the Orchestra (1923-1934). At Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra will add arias from Verdi's Rigoletto and Macbeth, to be sung by the Serbian baritone Željko Lu?i?, a Met Opera sensation. The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, opens their celebratory 50th Anniversary Season with three beloved works in the classical repertoire, Verdi La Traviata, Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6. The soloist on the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto is the winner of the 2009 Van Cliburn competition, Ms. Di Wu, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. Di Wu Plays Mendelssohn takes place at 2:30 pm, Sunday September 14 and 7:30 pm, Monday September 15 in the Kimmel Center's intimate Perelman Theater. American mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas is the young priestess Adalgisa; Italian tenor Marco Berti is Pollione; and American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn is Oroveso. Tickets for Dylan F. Thomas' new production of Verdi's immortal La Traviata are already going fast! One of the most beloved operas of all time, La Traviata was also the inspiration for the hit film 'Pretty Woman' starring Julia Robers ('Violetta') and Richard Gere ('Alfredo'). But while Hollywood insists on a 'happily-ever-after' ending, opera (and real life) often takes a different direction. La Traviata's moving story and music will be brought to life on The Madrid Theatre stage by an outstanding cast, led by Shira Renee Thomas and Dylan F. Thomas at the Sunday 3 pm matinees (9/21,28), and byRachelle Woolston and Matthew Miles at the 7:30 pm Saturday evening performance (9/27). General Director Plácido Domingo has announced final details for LA Opera's first revival of Florencia en el Amazonas, an enchanting and romantic opera by composer Daniel Catán. Co-commissioned by LA Opera in 1995, the opera returns to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for six performances from November 22 through December 20, 2014. In the exquisitely beautiful opera, inspired by the fiction of Gabriel García Márquez, a steamboat passage along the fabled Amazon becomes a poignant voyage of discovery for all seven travelers on board.
