Direct from Dublin, The Five Irish Tenors bring their 'Salute to Ireland' to the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage, Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. This concert is part of the first tour ever in North America of Ireland's most popular ensemble, and has been specially created for the United States and Canada. Prominent Soprano Roberta Peters Dies at Age 86

Roberta Peters, one of the most prominent American singers to achieve lasting fame and success in opera, has passed away at the age of 86.  Peters is noted for her 35-year association with the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York, among the longest such associations between a singer and a company in opera. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1998. Written for the Venetian Carnival of 1756, Goldoni's comedy recounts the matrimonial scheming, gossip, and games enlivening the daily activity of a bustling but poor Venetian piazza where pandemonium reigns. The commedia-inspired play centers on four scrappy, hard-working, hard-playing families whose daily lives on a small square are interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious wealthy stranger during Carnival.  (more...)

James Conlon Renews Contract as Music Director of LA Opera

General Director Placido Domingo announced today that James Conlon has renewed his contract as the company's Richard Seaver Music Director through the end of the 2020/21 season. Currently celebrating his tenth anniversary with the company, Mr. Conlon has conducted 314 performances to date for LA Opera. When he returns to the podium of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on January 28 to conduct The Abduction from the Seraglio, he will have conducted 50 different operas at LA Opera. (more...)

Mary Zimmerman brings her wondrous theatrical imagination to Dvo?ak's fairytale of love and longing, rejection and redemption. Brandon Jovanovich, Jamie Barton, Katarina Dalayman, and Eric Owens complete the all-star cast, and Mark Elder conducts.  The Ridgefield Playhouse and Craig's Fine Jewelry Live in HD Series presents an encore performance of The Met Opera in HD Dvo?ak's Rusalka on Sunday, February 26 at 12 p.m.  In the depths of a lively lake, Rusalka, water nymph and daughter of the ruling water sprite, bemoans her fate. Her eye has been caught by a dashing prince, but being a nymph she cannot have him. Going against the wishes of her father, she consults with the witch Jezibaba, who teaches her a spell to become mortal. The only caveat; she will be mute and, therefore unable to express her love. If the Prince betrays her, they'll both be damned for eternity. Of course, she takes her chances, which throw her into an adventure of jealousy, exile, love and redemption that will change her forever more. (more...)

Boston Lyric Opera's THE RAKE'S PROGRESS Brings Stravinsky Back to Boston

Boston Lyric Opera's (BLO) production of The Rake's Progress, which opens March 12 for a four-performance run at Emerson/Cutler Majestic Theatre, brings to life the traditional story of a young man seduced by monetary and carnal pleasures at the hand of a devilish valet.  The work hasn't been presented in a fully staged professional production since BLO produced it in 1987.  A professional concert version and several conservatories have been staged, but productions in Boston are infrequent.
