New York, NY (March 4, 2015) – Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo will sing their first Met performances of the title character in Massenet's Manon and her devoted lover, the Chevalier des Grieux. Emmanuel Villaume will conduct the first revival of Laurent Pelly's 2012 Met staging, also starring Russell Braun as Manon's cousin, Lescaut, and Nicolas Testé as the Chevalier's father, the Comte des Grieux. On Site Opera has garnered considerable acclaim for its immersive, site-specific productions since stage director Eric Einhorn founded it just three years ago. This summer, the company kicks off its most ambitious undertaking to date:The Figaro Project. On Site Opera will offer lesser-known operatic adaptations of French playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais' (1732-1799) famed trilogy of Figaro plays: The Barber of Seville (1775), The Marriage of Figaro (1784) and The Guilty Mother(1792). The Figaro Project will reacquaint audiences with their favorite Beaumarchais' characters in new and unexpected ways in non-traditional venues across New York City. (more...)

The audited financial results for San Francisco Opera's 2013–14 season (FY14) were announced today by San Francisco Opera Association President Keith Geeslin: a deficit of $348,244 on an operating budget of $74,119,493. The Company's 91st season presented eight main stage works at the War Memorial Opera House in addition to numerous concerts, recitals, workshops and community engagement events attracting more than 271,954 individuals. Baltimore, Md. (March 23, 2015) — For the conclusion of the 2014-2015 season, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and Music Director Marin Alsop lead the BSO premiere of Leonard Bernstein's comedic operetta Candide on June 11 at the Music Center at Strathmore, and June 12 through June 14 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The BSO announced today that the semi-staged production of Candide will be directed by Garnett Bruce and features an all-star cast including Peter Sagal, the host of NPR's weekly current events quiz show “Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me,” and Judy Kaye, Tony Award-winning star of The Phantom of the Opera. Rounding out the cast are Keith Jameson, Lauren Snouffer, Joshua Hopkins, Mark Diamond, Marie Lenormand, Stephanie Sadownik, Curtis Bannister, Patrick Cook, Andrew McLaughlin, Melissa Wimbish and Lewis Shaw. The company creates productions of classics and new pieces that are daring and visceral—productions that manifest the emotional grandeur and theatrical power of opera with minimal means. Heartbeat's one-act festival presentation of György Kurtág's Kafka-Fragments, directed by Heard, and the New York premiere of Jacques Offenbach's Daphnis & Chloé, in a new English translation directed by Proske, marks this young company's debut. This summer, On Site Opera (OSO) will present a new production that exemplifies the company's mission to stage operas in non-traditional locations ideally suited to the stories they tell. OSO will offer an immersive site-specific staging of Giovanni Paisiello's The Barber of Seville at the opulent Fabbri Mansion (House of the Redeemer) on New York City's Upper East Side. Conducted by the company's newly appointed Music Director, Geoffrey McDonald and directed by OSO's Co-Founder and Artistic Director, Eric Einhorn, the production will be updated to the early decades of the twentieth century (when the Fabbri Mansion was built) and staged in themansion's outdoor courtyard and library. Unexpected Opera returns to St James Studio this summer with more of its popular singing chat shows. The series will begin on 21st May with Traviata Tells All, in which high society courtesan Violetta Valery, heroine of Verdi's best-loved opera La Traviata, is a guest on Brooklyn mobster Tony LaScala's TV chat show. Arias and scenes from the opera are woven seamlessly into the conversations. All the familiar elements of chat shows will be there: topical humour, cheeky questions, confrontations and audience participation. (more...)
