Pushcart Players, New Jersey's renowned touring theatre for young audiences will perform their beloved musical production, "Peter and the Wolf" at various locations this month throughout New Jersey as part of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance's 20th Annual Stages Festival. Every March, The Stages Festival offers free and discounted performances, workshops, play readings, and behind-the-scenes events for all ages. Events are presented by professional Equity theatres; some take place at their theatres, and some take place in libraries, community centers, performing arts houses, senior centers and more. Premiere Stages, the professional theatre company in residence at Kean University, recently completed two playwriting residencies in the Rahway School District, graciously funded by The Northfield Bank Foundation. Over the course of seven weeks, students in Ms. Kristyn Suckow's 7th Grade English & Language Arts class at Rahway Academy and Ms. Jennifer Cirillo's 6th Grade Language Arts & Social Studies class at Roosevelt Elementary School learned the basics of playwriting and collaborated to write original short plays for the stage. Both residencies culminated in schoolwide assemblies of the student-written work performed by professional actors. (more...)

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) will observe Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with NJPAC's annual Celebration, "Keeping the Dream" on Saturday, January 14th at 5pm.  This private presentation will honor two distinguished members of the Newark Metropolitan community who take action and live the words of the great Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. making a difference in the community where they work and live. This year's honorees are Gloria Hopkins Buck, LCSW who will receive the "Steward of the Dream" award and Ryan P. Haygood, Esqwho will be the recipient of the "Visionary of the Future" award. The celebration will include a special performance by NJPAC's Jazz for Teens and the Grammy Award winning Jubilation Choir who under the leadership and tutelage of Rev. Premiere Stages at Kean University Announces 2017 Bauer-Boucher Award Winner

Premiere Stages, the professional theatre company in residence at Kean University, has named B.V. Marshall as the winner of the 2017 Bauer-Boucher Award. Named for longtime Premiere Stages supporters W. John Bauer and Nancy Boucher, the Bauer-Boucher Award honors the work of gifted Kean student and alumni playwrights. The award is presented in conjunction with the one-day developmental Bauer-Boucher Kean Student/Alumni Reading, which affords the selected playwright the opportunity to hear his or her work read aloud by professional actors at Kean. This year's reading, taking place on January 23 at 3:20pm in the Miron Student Center Little Theatre on the Kean campus, will feature Mr. Marshall's Incident at Willow Creek. In this compelling and timely new work, Verite, an African American college professor, questions her neutral stance on guns after a troubling incident results in the killing of an innocent black man. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. This year's distinguished recipients honored were community advocate Gloria Hopkins Buck, LCSW (Steward of the Dream Award) and civil rights attorney Ryan P. A treasure trove of never before seen World War I letters are now on exhibit at Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University to mark the 100th anniversary of the United States entering the First World War.  Brothers in Arms: Memories of the Great War tells the story of the service of Captain John Kean, his brother, Congressman Robert W. Kean, as well as their three Roosevelt cousins, George, John and Philip. For the first time ever, their personal letters written during the war will be on display as well as their uniforms, military handbooks, maps, pictures, and commemorative pins. (more...)
