New Children's Book by Arlene Brown is Released
by BWW News Desk - Oct 14, 2016

A stunning wedding collar made from luxurious leather and diamonds has Gone Missing, and it's up to a doggie detective duo to find out what happened before the special event is ruined. They're under the gun because they only have three days to do so. A new children's book released by Dog Ear Publishing follows the story of the canine sleuths who are on the case. When Monique Potter, a poodle, discovers her collar missing from her nightstand, she can't stop crying because she hoped to wear it during her wedding three days later. Although her parents call the German shepherd police, they also place a call to a special detective agency run by Bradley and Mr. Quick, dogs who they hope can find the stolen collar quickly. The detectives - and the police - don't know the necklace was taken by Dollar and his partner Cash, who had been engaged to Monique until she broke it off to become acquainted with Edward, who she said 'Yes' to a year later. Cash claims he took the collar just to tell Monique to delay her wedding, but once a con dog, always a con dog. Can Bradley and Mr. Quick find the collar in time or will the Potters be forced to delay the ceremony their daughter has always dreamed of? 'Bradley and Mr. Quick the Canine Duo: In Search of the Wedding Collar,' a short chapter book, is full of colorful canine characters from an eavesdropping alley cat to beautiful waitresses, impatient fathers and crusty bulldog witnesses. Readers step into the world of doggie detectives with a front-row seat to the action and adventure. Author Arlene Brown has been interested in writing since 1987 but life and time were not on her side until her retirement in 2010. She worked for Horizon Air starting in 1998 as a special service agent, dispatcher for the special service team, on the floor and as a baggage handler and handling aircrafts. Brown received training in writing television and radio ads starting in 1991 at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Bellevue, Wash., as well as training for voiceover work and being a disc jockey. She worked on her portfolio of commercials and edited and prepared manuscripts for writers in Seattle before joining the airline. Brown is looking forward to writing now that she has the time to do so. BWW Recap: It's Showtime with Honest Abe on TIMELESS
by Courtney Henley - Oct 11, 2016

Last week's premiere of TIMELESS started off the season with a bang. (Ha, see what I did there? Because the Hindenburg blew up?!) This week's journey takes us to Ford's Theater, April 14, 1865. If that date sounds familiar to you, it should: it's the date President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while enjoying a performance of Our American Cousin. Although Flynn's motives for wanting to go back and alter these specific events in history is still unclear, last week's premiere showed us that every change Flynn makes, big or small, can dramatically impact the course of history.  (more...)

Museum of the Moving Image to Host Theo Angelopoulos Retrospective in July
by BWW News Desk - Jun 24, 2016

Greece's most prominent film director of the post-1968 era, Theo Angelopoulos (1935–2012) was a master cinema stylist. His investigations into history and politics, tyranny and resistance, and spiritual anomie and emotional devastation place him on equal footing with filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Wim Wenders. Today, at a time when Greece has struggled with impending economic collapse, and as the country's refugee crisis has worsened, with displaced populations fleeing war in the Middle East and massing on its borders, the themes of Angelopoulos's cinema are pressing once again. Museum of the Moving Image will present Eternity and History: The Cinema of Theo Angelopoulos, a complete retrospective of the director's career—the first in the United States in 25 years—from July 8 through 24, 2016. The retrospective will also be presented at the Harvard Film Archive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from July 15 through August 22. The presentation of the retrospective at Museum of the Moving Image was made possible with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce. (more...)

Shel Weinstein Releases IN MURDER'S WAKE
by BWW News Desk - Jul 28, 2016

Tough Chicagoan Henry Fox is a disappointment to many around him - including himself. His career in insurance fraud investigation has been nothing but grunt work and minor arson scams, and his personal life is not much better. Imagine his surprise when he's assigned to investigate a scuba diver who has Gone Missing just weeks after buying an insurance policy. The case creates an unforgettable adventure in this new award-winning book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Everyone wishes Henry, who's pushing 30, would do more with his life. His Mohawk grandfather wants him to embrace his American Indian roots, his friends want him to fully commit to his girlfriend, and his boss wishes he'd be more predictable and toe the company line. Things change when he's unexpectedly assigned to find out what might have happened to Ray Maliff, who disappeared during a dive off Catalina Island in California. His fate is Henry's problem because Ray had just bought an insurance policy for $250,000, worth double if he dies in an accident. Despite his surprise at being given the case and the motives behind the assignment, Henry plunges in; but he doesn't have all the information, he learns to his surprise, and Ray's widow is not what he expected. Mobsters from Vegas with ties to Chicago make their presence known, and the bodies begin piling up. Henry finds life beginning to go his way, thanks to a change, but the case refuses to go away. It will take all of Henry's cunning - and that of his new partner - to resolve it and leave murder in their wake. 'In Murder's Wake' takes readers on an unforgettable adventure set against the backdrop of 1960s Chicago, glamorous Las Vegas and gritty Los Angeles, and it's earning rave reviews. 'The Southside of Chicago's 1950s comes alive in this entertaining and fast-paced action/thriller,' writes John Shehorn, author of 'Unexpected Hero.' 'Follow Detective Henry Fox as he stumbles through criminal investigations utilizing brawn more than brains,' writes Sheli Ellsworth, book critic and author of 'The Psychoanalysis of Everyday Life. 'A truly exciting read.' Weinstein, who was born and raised on Chicago's Southside, now lives in Oxnard, Calif. This is the second book in Weinstein's Henry Fox series. 'Left Cross' was the first. BWW Review: Raise a Glass High to Monomoy's JOHNNY ON A SPOT
by Kristen Morale - Aug 25, 2016

Have you ever been high on what life is and all it throws at you - to become charged by the excitement and wonder of it all, followed by the mayhem, the confusion and the constant need to keep up with the bundles of mess that almost seem too perfectly destined to fall right in your lap? Have you ever dealt with the absurdly funny truth of a unrestrained drunkard of a Senate-hopeful Gone Missing on the day he is meant to win over the votes of all who believe he is the perfect man for the job? Probably not, which makes it all the funnier to watch how such a wacky plot, saturated with a conservatively (hah) witty sense of humor circling around an almost irresolvable bunch of problems, has now come to the Monomoy Theatre in the form of Johnny on a Spot. New Novel in Henry Fox Series Earns Award from Publishing Company
by BWW News Desk - Aug 1, 2016

Author Shel Weinstein didn't have to look far for inspiration for the character who stars in his latest book, which has earned the Dog Ear Publishing Award of Literary Excellence. Like Weinstein, Henry Fox hails from the Windy City. 'I was born and raised in Chicago and the character is a Chicagoan,' Weinstein said. 'The plot is taken from real life - at least the bare bones - in that there was a scuba-diving accident where a body wasn't found and a large insurance claim.' (Weinstein's late wife worked as a paralegal at a law firm that defended claims against scuba-diving companies, and the case that inspired the novel was one the firm worked on.) 'I have no idea if that one was fraud or not, but it got me thinking,' he said. Sent in the 1960s, 'In Murder's Wake' stars insurance investigator Henry Fox, whose career has been going nowhere until he begins investigating the potential fraud case of a scuba diver who's Gone Missing just weeks after taking out a large insurance policy on himself. The case takes one twist after another, involving mobsters from Chicago and elsewhere and a mounting body count before all is revealed. Award of Literary Excellence winners are determined by Dog Ear's editorial team. The managing editor, editorial services manager and the publisher review its recommendations. The editor for 'In Murder's Wake' had nothing but praise for the book: 'This is by far the most well-written, well-executed novel I have ever edited. You masterfully developed the characters and the plot and have done an excellent job with pacing and dialog.' Weinstein takes pride in the novel's differences from other books. 'Henry isn't the genius detective that most people have come to expect. He's not the sharpest blade in the drawer, and he's the kind of guy if he can't understand it, he wants to beat the crap out of it. He's a tough guy,' he said. 'His eventual wife, Julia, is very much the brains of the operation.' And the novels don't follow the usual formula for thrillers. 'All the books (in the series) solve crime with street justice - they never rely on the legal system. Henry is kind of a thug, so he doesn't trust the police. So the solution at the end of the book always ends with street justice.' In addition, several of the characters provide diversity, including Henry, who is half Mohawk. 'There aren't too many of those (types of characters) around. If there's anything I like about the series, it's the interracial camaraderie between Henry and the others because they don't make a point of it at all - it's just there,' he said. Weinstein said the characters of Jesse and Silas were based on people he knew and grew up with, and he enjoys being able to include them 'without being preachy.' Thus far, all the reaction to the novel has been positive. A couple of book clubs are reading it now and promise to provide additional feedback. He also plans to hold book signings and talk to other book clubs. 'The first book (in the series) everybody seemed to love, so they were kind of waiting for this book,' Weinstein said. 'I was on Facebook with the information that it was coming, and people kept posting asking about when it was coming out... I think the difference between this one for the first book is that this book has perhaps a tad more humor than the first one, which was a little more on the dark side.' The former advertising copywriter, who has been writing all of his life, said the challenge in writing the sequel was how to convey the back stories of the characters without being too redundant and, at the same time, making it able to stand alone for those who had not read the first novel. He said the main characters practically wrote their own story, so that was not a problem. 'They were already written, so they took over and wrote themselves,' he said. Weinstein, who was born and raised on Chicago's Southside, now lives in Oxnard, Calif. He worked in advertising. This is the second book in Weinstein's Henry Fox series. 'Left Cross' was the first. The third book in the series will be set in the 1970s. For additional information, please visit www.shelweinstein.com In Murder's Wake Shel Weinstein Dog Ear Publishing ISBN: 978-1-4575-4666-2 264 pages $14.99 US Available at Ingram, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and fine bookstores everywhere. BWW Review: Pennybags and Henny Penny: Financially Farcical CRASH AND BURN at Theatrical Mining Company
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Aug 1, 2016

Such dramatic suspense as exists in Crash and Burn hangs on the question whether it is possible Financier Milty has outsmarted himself (perhaps out-stupided himself might be a better phrase) by retaining two such paragons of dimness, greed, and vanity as Lawyers Crash and Burn to represent him: Might they fail at failure?
