BWW Review: REVOLT. SHE SAID. REVOLT AGAIN., Shoreditch Town Hall, 2 September 2016
by Marianka Swain - Sep 3, 2016

I hope there's a time when we don't feel like Alice Birch's bold, blackly funny, uncompromising battle cry of a play is a necessary intervention. A time when we're not reeling from sexist Olympics commentary, relentless online attacks on women who dare to enter political debate, or the news that American swimmer Brock Turner served only three months in prison after raping an unconscious girl. A time when the play's explosive anger and bone-deep sadness isn't met by our own. (more...)

BWW Review: A Solid Production of BLOOD Fully Succeeds in Making You See Red!
by Gil Kaan - Mar 7, 2016

The world premiere of Robert Allan Ackerman's BLOOD receives a sturdy full-on, large theatre mounting by The Garage in the tiny space of The Complex. Ackerman's smart, in-depth script has adapted the actual 1980s events of a government conspiracy to sell HIV-contaminated blood products into an involving, totally wrenching two hours that will tear out the hearts of anyone with any inkling or experiences with the beginnings of AIDS. by Don Grigware - Mar 28, 2016

Winner of 4 Tony Awards in 2014, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is a devilishly clever musical sendup of the British aristocracy circa 1909. Production-wise it's a class act all the way, and for its adult audiences, it's a delicious odyssey of. nonstop laughter. Now at the Ahmanson through May 1, the infectiously broad satire will have you on the edge of your seat throughout its two and a half hours. Skillfully executed by director Darko Tresnjak and his awe-inspiring cast, it's a surefire knock 'em dead hit. (more...)

BWW Review: Kim Grogg & Kim Sutton Celebrate Women Power and the Joys of Friendship In Charming Holiday Duo Show at Don't Tell Mama
by Billie Roe - Dec 21, 2015

With the holiday season upon us how wonderful it is to experience the joyful celebration of friendship. In their recent sold out performance (December 17th at Don't Tell Mama), the attractive girl-power singing duo, Kim Grogg and Kim Sutton, examine the true meaning of friendship from a decidedly female point of view. Gracing the stage spectacularly dressed in shades of sparkling silver and platinum grey, these two alluring ladies begin the evening by conjuring up a bit of their own "Magic" (John Farrar). Grogg informs the audience that she and Sutton had previously met in cabaret class, but pretty much solidified their Fast and Furious friendship this past summer after having survived the "ultimate cabaret boot camp" at The Eugene O'Neill Cabaret Conference. BWW Review: Thrilling and Hilarious PETER AND THE STARCATCHER at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis
by Chris Gibson - Dec 11, 2015

There are some St. Louis connections in this current production of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER. There's local author Ridley Pearson who, along with Dave Barry, crafted a terribly interesting and arresting 'prequel' to the story of Peter Pan with their entertaining novel Peter and the Starcatcher. The stage version of this tale, written by Rick Elice, is an equally imaginative and inspired effort that utilizes a relatively small cast, with just about everyone playing multiple roles, that takes off at a frenetic pace that captures the same qualities that distinguished the original work. I'd seen a touring version over a year ago, but this production by The St. Louis Repertory Theatre is absolutely amazing. It just seems fresher, more touching, and more joyful. I highly recommend this show, as it appeals to families with humor and heart that anyone old or young can enjoy! (more...)

BWW Review: Rarely Revived It's a Bird...It's a Plane...IT'S SUPERMAN THE MUSICAL
by Don Grigware - Apr 25, 2016

Wham! Pow! Boom! Up and away, it's Superman! Growing up in the 50s I couldn't wait for the next weekly adventure-filled installment of Supie and Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and the Daily Planet on the small television screen. It was thrilling to see a man go into a telephone booth and change from street clothes into tights - even if they were baggy - and fly off - imagine! - to save the world from crime and destruction. It didn't matter that it was pure fantasy and that he he was only a comic book hero. Superman brought lots of excitement into our young lives. In 1966, the same musical composers who wrote the successful Broadway hit Bye Bye Birdie, Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, penned It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman! The New Musical Comedy and in spite of the great reviews, it did not catch on with the public, so quickly fizzled. Now 50 years later, what a camp to look back and laugh at all the silliness and innocence of that era, for the Superman musical is loaded with clumsy, goofy, campy laughs. Now onstage in a rare revival ... It's Superman receives a terrifically entertaining production at the Grove Theatre in Upland. (more...)

BWW Review: Community Players Creates Heavenly Hilarity with NUNSENSE 2: THE SECOND COMING
by Robert Barossi - Apr 11, 2016

You might be hard pressed to come up with a musical that is or has a sequel. Sequels seem to primarily be the domain of movies, books and perhaps television shows. There is one musical, though, that actually has a number of sequels to its credit. The hit show Nunsense hasn't just spawned one or two follow-ups, it actually has nine shows which are considered sequels or spin-offs of the original. Now, Community Players is presenting the second in that line, Nunsense 2: The Second Coming. (more...)
