BWW Review: REVOLT. SHE SAID. REVOLT AGAIN., Shoreditch Town Hall, 2 September 2016
by Marianka Swain - Sep 3, 2016

I hope there's a time when we don't feel like Alice Birch's bold, blackly funny, uncompromising battle cry of a play is a necessary intervention. A time when we're not reeling from sexist Olympics commentary, relentless online attacks on women who dare to enter political debate, or the news that American swimmer Brock Turner served only three months in prison after raping an unconscious girl. A time when the play's explosive anger and bone-deep sadness isn't met by our own. (more...)

The Cleveland area has been and is ripe with playwrights. Mike Geither, David Hansen, Margaret Lynch, Jonathan Wilhelm, Michael Oatman, Eric Schmiedl and Faye Sholiton are only a few of the present-day writers. Historically, Langston Hughes, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee were proud area playwrights. Probably no local scribe has been more prolific than Eric Coble. (more...)

One of comedian Christine O'Leary's first gigs in Ridgefield was when Adam Broderick hired her to perform at his staff holiday party. To get material, she went undercover at both of his salons, posing as a new employee who was sent to 'shadow the staff to gain experience.' Weeks later, she shocked everyone when she took center stage at their holiday party, grabbed the microphone, and began a litany of dead-on impressions and inside jokes that made everyone howl with laughter. Jeanne Sakata's HOLD THESE TRUTHS Makes Alaska Debut
by BWW News Desk - Nov 9, 2016

During World War II, nearly 120,000 Japanese-Americans, including over 200 Alaskans, were ordered to internment camps in the name of "national security." Gordon Hirabayashi was one of only three people who attempted to defy the order on legal grounds. Hold These Truths is his story. It's a play about one man who stood up to power and discrimination in the middle of a worldwide conflict. Gordon persevered, bringing his fight to the U.S. Supreme Court twice, and in 2012 was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Perseverance Theatre is honored to be collaborating with a team that includes a Japanese scenic designer, and Japanese-American actor, director, and playwright to produce this story in Alaska. BWW Review: La Mirada Brings the Laughs with LEND ME A TENOR
by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 4, 2016

When it comes to the theatrical art of farce, Ken Ludwig's hilarious 1986 stage play LEND ME A TENOR certainly qualifies as a perfect example of the genre. Amusingly cheeky throughout, the 9-time Tony Award nominated comedy has been revived locally with a posh new production under the direction of Art Manke that is now playing at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through November 13. Utilizing a laundry list of classic madcap set-ups, LEND ME A TENOR feels very much like a well-paced, meticulously crafted, old fashioned sitcom episode that has been super-sized into two gloriously funny acts. BWW Review: LOOSE GRAVEL is Raw, Edgy and Occasionally Brilliant
by Frank Benge - Jan 6, 2017

LOOSE GRAVEL, a new work by Frank Wo/Men Collective, is a collaborative performance piece by a group of Austin and New York emerging artists that is part dance and part short theatrical scenes that span the gamut from comedic to absurdist and back to dramatic. The work is a gender fluid piece of thirty two individual vignettes that is multi-lingual in places. This highly physical piece takes risks that don't always work, but when they do, there are flashes of brilliance on this tiny stage. (more...)

BWW Review: Ahmanson Welcomes Charming AMELIE
by Don Grigware - Dec 19, 2016

Amelie A New Musical, based on the 2001 French film Amelie, has a magical charm that reminds one of Matilda, at least in the beginning scenes. We meet the young Amelie (Savvy Crawford) who enters through a picture frame (see photo at left) and proceeds to tell her story, quite sad in fact, for she is saddled with a heart condition and difficult parents who keep her isolated and unhappy. Her mother meets a tragic, almost freakish demise and Amelie is brought up by her father who lives in a world of his own. As she matures, she realizes her lot in life will be to make other people happy. Now onstage at the Ahmanson Theatre through January 15, Amelie A New Musical has some wonderfully imaginative moments and a sparkling cast under the fast-paced direction of Pam MacKinnon. (more...)
