Jeanne Sakata's HOLD THESE TRUTHS Makes Alaska Debut
by BWW News Desk - Nov 9, 2016

During World War II, nearly 120,000 Japanese-Americans, including over 200 Alaskans, were ordered to internment camps in the name of "national security." Gordon Hirabayashi was one of only three people who attempted to defy the order on legal grounds. Hold These Truths is his story. It's a play about one man who stood up to power and discrimination in the middle of a worldwide conflict. Gordon persevered, bringing his fight to the U.S. Supreme Court twice, and in 2012 was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Perseverance Theatre is honored to be collaborating with a team that includes a Japanese scenic designer, and Japanese-American actor, director, and playwright to produce this story in Alaska. Living through political tumult and societal unrest brings many emotions to the surface: fear, worry, anxiety, and most notably, anger. In these times of uncertainty, the healing powers of dance can reflect all that is good and beautiful about humanity. And it's just what Dorrance Dance achieved on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 during their run at The Joyce Theater. In a stunning collaboration with the velvety vocals and musical styling of Toshi Reagon & BIGLovely, esteemed dancers Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and Derick K. BWW Review: LOOSE GRAVEL is Raw, Edgy and Occasionally Brilliant
by Frank Benge - Jan 6, 2017

LOOSE GRAVEL, a new work by Frank Wo/Men Collective, is a collaborative performance piece by a group of Austin and New York emerging artists that is part dance and part short theatrical scenes that span the gamut from comedic to absurdist and back to dramatic. The work is a gender fluid piece of thirty two individual vignettes that is multi-lingual in places. This highly physical piece takes risks that don't always work, but when they do, there are flashes of brilliance on this tiny stage. (more...)

BWW Review: Ahmanson Welcomes Charming AMELIE
by Don Grigware - Dec 19, 2016

Amelie A New Musical, based on the 2001 French film Amelie, has a magical charm that reminds one of Matilda, at least in the beginning scenes. We meet the young Amelie (Savvy Crawford) who enters through a picture frame (see photo at left) and proceeds to tell her story, quite sad in fact, for she is saddled with a heart condition and difficult parents who keep her isolated and unhappy. Her mother meets a tragic, almost freakish demise and Amelie is brought up by her father who lives in a world of his own. As she matures, she realizes her lot in life will be to make other people happy. Now onstage at the Ahmanson Theatre through January 15, Amelie A New Musical has some wonderfully imaginative moments and a sparkling cast under the fast-paced direction of Pam MacKinnon. (more...)

BWW Review: THE PRODUCERS at Pollard Theatre Company is Not to be Missed
by Robert Barossi - Apr 16, 2017

It's never a good idea to say that anything is a sure thing. On the other hand, when the creative team behind the Broadway smash The Producers put the show together, it must have seemed just a little bit like it could be a sure thing. You had the comic genius of Mel Brooks creating a musical based on his own hysterical movie, with the help of other Broadway heavy hitters like Susan Stroman, who directed and choreographed the original production, as well as major stars like Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The show went on to become one of the biggest hits in modern  Broadway memory and the current production at the Pollard Theatre loses none of what made the original such an enormous success.
