by Michael L. Quintos - Oct 14, 2010

Though times certainly have changed from when the Greatest Generation showed true heroism in the battlefields of European and Tropical soil, it's staggering to realize that in 2010, racial issues still feel like a haphazardly patched wound reopened. Prejudice, no matter what the decade, still stings. These themes were boldly explored back in 1949, the year the original production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC first wowed audiences. In this new, exquisite, magnificent revival, director Bartlett Sher lets loose an oustanding, revitalized production that is now playing for a two-week engagement at the Orange County Performing Arts Center through October 24. It's a classic beautifully reborn. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Hilarious Production of AVENUE Q at the Fox Theatre through 5/2BWW Reviews: Hilarious Production of AVENUE Q at the Fox Theatre through 5/2
by Chris Gibson - May 1, 2010

I was just a wee bit too old to have watched Sesame Street when it premiered on public television during the late 1960's, although I was certainly aware of its impact. But, it wasn't until my son was born a few years back that I was fully exposed to its sunny charms. Which is probably why AVENUE Q, the wickedly funny parody of this venerable children's classic, resonates so deeply with me. It's an incredibly amusing, adult-oriented satire filled with goofy puppets, catchy songs, and clever animated films, and it's currently playing the Fox Theatre for a brief run ending May 2, 2010. by Michael L. Quintos - Mar 4, 2011

You know you're in for a naughty good time when a show includes graphic puppet sex, cute but sadistic bears, and a special appearance by TV's Gary Coleman. What can somewhat be described as a very, very adult-leaning, expletive-spewing cousin of the iconic PBS children's series Sesame Street, AVENUE Q-whose 2nd National Tour is now playing a too-brief, week-long engagement at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood through March 6-manages to be both entertaining and revolutionary. Timely, surprisingly touching, mildly offensive, harmlessly risque, and downright hilarious, AVENUE Q is easily one the smartest, funniest musical comedies ever to grace a Broadway stage in the last few decades. BWW Reviews: MTW's THE WEDDING SINGER Revisits the '80'sBWW Reviews: MTW's THE WEDDING SINGER Revisits the '80's
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 21, 2011

Buoyed by a charmingly droll book penned by Chad Beguelin and the film's original screenwriter Tim Herlihy, THE WEDDING SINGER--playing through July 24 at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Long Beach--isn't just a celebratory collection of 80's era sight gags, though it's chockfull of them. Rather, the musical is also quite an enjoyable, silly romp that's spiked with the kind of witty snarkiness and unexpected sweetness that fits snuggly alongside today's funniest sitcoms and rom-com movies. The fact that this wacky musical comedy is punctuated by some awesome singing and dancing is just pure, sugar-laced icing on a multi-tiered wedding cake. It's got plenty of laughs, and it easily earns every single one of them. (more...)
