BWW Blog: Molly Tynes of A.R.T.'s PIPPIN - PIPPIN Goes to the Circus - Literally!
by Guest Blogger: Molly Tynes - Nov 17, 2012

We have talked a lot in rehearsal about the traditional perception of the traveling circus troupe - about the ways in which we romanticize that life. In a way everyone secretly wishes he or she could run away with the circus and perform some unimaginable feat few others would dare even attempt. We've talked about the transient nature of the circus - how suddenly it bursts into town thrilling audiences with colorful displays and inexplicable tricks, and then just like that, it is gone again. There is an element of mystery in all of that. You find yourself wondering, "Who are these people? What do they do when they are not flying through the air or jumping throughburning hoops? Do they eat? Do they sleep? Do they perform ordinary daily tasks just like the rest of us?" They become almost superhuman figures existing outside the constraints of regular life. (more...)

BWW Reviews: North Fork Community Theatre's INTO THE WOODS

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony award winning musical Into the Woods is produced fairly consistently since it premiered on Broadway in 1987. Fortunately, Director Brett Chizever, in a strong directorial debut, got the right cast to create a wonderful incarnation of the theatre staple. (more...)

BWW Reviews: THE PRODUCERS - All It's Cracked Up to Be
by Tim Carney - Jul 12, 2012

Having never seen The Producers, but having heard so much about it, I was genuinely excited to see a performance of this show on a stage. The lasting impression that I took from The Production Company's version is that Mel Brooks is one very funny man who's writing stands alone in the musical comedy genre. Whether on the expanses of a full scale broadway stage, on the West End or on the minimalist stage confronting us at The Arts Centre, this show genuinely works and is so clever in its nuance and wit that you can't help but admire its creator. BWW Reviews: A CHORUS LINE is Still a Hit, Despite Uneven Casting
by Justin Cowan - Dec 3, 2012

A Chorus Line is the 1975 Broadway musical that gives audiences an inside look at what it's like to be a dancer. The action of the play takes place at a single audition in which 17 dancers all vie for a spot in a new Broadway show. Throughout the course of the evening we learn about the dancers; their personalities, their pasts, and most importantly what has shaped them into the performers they are today. When A Chorus Line opened in 1975 it was met with an outpouring of positive press, and wound up taking home 9 Tony Awards including Best Musical and the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for drama. This show has it all; an exciting score, explosive dancing, and a ton of heart. It's no wonder that it ran in NYC for a total of 6,137 performances (unprecedented at that time), and is beloved and highly recognized by millions. (more...)
