Tick, tick... BOOM! is Larson’s semi-autobiographical story of Jon, an aspiring composer anxiously approaching his 30th birthday. Jon’s girlfriend wants to get married and leave New York for a more conventional life, his best friend is earning a fortune on Madison Avenue, and Jon is still waiting on tables while trying to create the great American musical. An inspiring story of a struggling artist who chooses to follow his dreams, tick, tick... BOOM! features a dynamic pop-rock score blended with traditional musical theater styles, in what many believe to be Larson’s homage to Stephen Sondheim.
This show marks the first for another new ambitious DC theatre company. With this extremely solid first outing, I can't wait to see what they do next!

TICK, TICK...BOOM is Jonathan Larson's story before he wrote Rent. Social issues, plotlines and melodic phrasing made famous in that rock opera are in formation here. It's simpler than Rent with its own quirky charm. The story is not new, but the performers are refreshing, and the real-life tragedy adds new meaning to the main character's obsession with his looming milestone birthday.

Three actors portray ten characters through fourteen songs to take the audience on the playwright/composer's journey that ignited an interest in Jonathan Larson's work and ultimately led to Broadway sensation, RENT. Larson originally began performing the piece as a solo work in 1990. Following his death in 1996, playwright David Auburn revised the work and adapted it for three actors. Red Branch Theatre Company's Executive Producer Stephanie Williams and Managing Director Tiffany Underwood Holmes unveiled the titles for the 2014 season this past weekend at the company's opening of Tick, tick... BOOM! Starting the season off with a bang on St. Patrick's Day (March 17, 2014), renowned American musical theatre composer Jason Robert Brown will present a benefit cabaret entitled 'I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You.' Howard County restaurant Iron Bridge Wine Company will cater the affair with Irish-themed favorites. All proceeds will benefit Red Branch Theatre Company's 2014 operating budget. This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime event given the opportunity to see this prominent composer in a rare concert appearance in the theatre's intimate space.

Happy Birthday, Neil Patrick Harris! A veteran of the theater, Harris recently tackled the role of Bobby in the New York Philharmonic's production of Stephen Sondheim's 'Company' at Lincoln Center. Harris made his Broadway debut in the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama 'Proof,' and subsequently starred on the Great White Way as the Emcee in 'Cabaret,' and as The Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald in the Tony Award-winning production of 'Assassins.' His additional theater credits include roles in 'All My Sons,' 'Tick, Tick... Boom,' 'The Paris Letter,' 'Sweeney Todd,' 'Rent' and 'Romeo and Juliet.' Harris made his theatrical directorial debut with 'I Am Grock' at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. Additionally, he directed a production of Jonathan Larson's 'Rent' at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and more recently he helmed a production of 'The Expert at the Card Table' at the Broad Stage Theater.
