BWW Reviews: It's the Story Between the Hits that Makes JERSEY BOYS a Continued Success
by Jill Schafer - Apr 30, 2015

The jukebox musical JERSEY BOYS is a crowd-pleaser. The story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons will celebrate 10 years on Broadway this fall and the tour is making its third stop in Minneapolis this week. At times during last night's opening night, the crowd reacted like this was a Four Seasons tribute concert. But it's so much more than that. This jukebox musical is not just hit after hit strung together with some loose threads we're supposed to accept as a plot. Rather this beloved and familiar music is woven into the true life story of the rise and fall of these Hall of Fame rock-and-rollers. It's like an episode of VH1's Behind the Music, revealing that all was not rosy behind those crisp harmonies and sharp dance moves. Fame and celebrity at a young age rarely lead to a smooth road in life. Any show that featured a string of hits from the '60s would be sure to sell out to a population dominated by baby boomers, but it's the clever book that weaves the hits together and tells a story worth hearing that is responsible for JERSEY BOYS' critical success and staying power.

BWW Reviews: Well Acted THE ANARCHIST Takes Up a Short Residence at Theatre Asylum
by Don Grigware - Apr 27, 2015

David Mamet's curious one-act The Anarchist, which bombed on Broadway in 2012 after a mere 17 performances, was called by critics 'a slip of a play'. True, it does come in at 70 minutes, but who cannot be riveted by Mamet's intriguing exploration of salvation? Yes, religious salvation that erupts during a prison interrogation serving as a final appeal for prisoner Cathy (Felicity Huffman), convicted some 35 years previous for the murders of two guards. Cathy was a young revolutionary at the time in Algeria; when we see her she describes herself as 'an old lady', perhaps somewhere in her 50s. Ann (Rebecca Pidgeon), the warden of the prison or psychologist working in direct connection with the prison authorities, performs the interrogation with one goal in mind: to break down Cathy, to make her confess the whereabouts of her accomplice, whom she hasn't seen or had contact with since the crime. Far-fetched, you say? But Cathy's release depends on this piece of information. Despite some dissatisfying results, Mamet's fiercely engrossing dialogue, crisp direction from Marja-Lewis Ryan and superior performances from both Huffman and Pidgeon make the one-act worthy of note.

Award-Winning Irish Author Comes Home to Boston
by Christina Mancuso - Dec 17, 2014

Penny McCann Pennington, author of acclaimed novel, 'It Burns a Lovely Light' made a splash in Somerville's Infamous Irish Restaurant and Pub, The Burren. 'You can't beat signing books to the sound of mandolin, guitar and some crisp Gaelic Harmonies,' says Pennington. 'Not to mention, the bartenders really know how to pour a pint of Guiness.' The daughter of an Air Force General, Pennington and her sisters sent many summers in Marshfield, Massachussetts, while their parents moved their belongings to yet another base. 'It Burns a Lovely Light' is a stay-up-all-nighter: When a possibly-too-close military family suddenly comes unsprung, the eldest daughter, Farley, gives up her dreams to care for her brother, William, an autistic savant. William is the novel's loyal and disarmingly insightful hero. 'The book was written primarily from Farley's perspective,' says Penny McCann Pennington, the author of 'It Burns a Lovely Light.' 'The impact of William just took over. It's a classic example of the story directing the author.' 'It Burns a Lovely Light' continues to receive rave reviews in major publications and won numerous awards / honorable mentions. Judges from the 22nd Annual Writer's Digest Awards gave her a perfect 5 ('outstanding') in all categories. The international organization Autism Speaks requested permission to include her novel in their on-line parent's resource library. And most recently, 'It Burns a Lovely Light' was named a finalist for the 2014 USA Best Book Award.

Barcham Books Launches Kindle Direct Publishing Giveaway
by Christina Mancuso - Dec 8, 2014

Title: 'Murder in Hand' (Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy, Book 3) Author: Celia Conrad Copyright: 2012 Publisher: Barcham Books Pages: 352 Trade Paperback and All E-Book Formats ISBN 13: 978-0954623340 ASIN: B00A1O1YQE 'The greatest pleasures lie in Celia Conrad's refusal or inability to write for the lowest common denominator. Instead she aims for the highest.' -Midwest Book Review (Murder in Hand) On Dec. 13 through Dec. 14, Barcham Books will gift readers with Book 3 in Celia Conrad's Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy (AAI), 'Murder in Hand' (MIH), as a free e-book via Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Select program. 'It's our way of saying thank you and wishing everyone a happy holiday,' said Barcham Books' Jane Hall. 'We are very pleased that Midwest Book Review features Murder in Hand this month. Everyone, it seems, just loves Alicia.' This cerebral legal murder mystery turns on Italian international corruption, Puccini and dead Probate attorneys as it hails the return of Alicia Allen, the potato chip loving half-Italian London lawyer who never lets her thriving relationship with a handsome lawyer cohort stand in the way of fingering a culprit. 'The beauty of Murder in Hand is that it can be read as a stand-alone,' said Hall. Journalist Marlan Warren recently sat down with Celia Conrad to discuss her author's journey from law to legal crime fiction: Warren: All the AAI books deal with the darker side of the legal world. Did you draw from your experiences as a London attorney? Conrad: As a solicitor I met some rather obnoxious people and a few shady/unsavory characters. Warren: Did you ever find yourself pursuing a murderer in your law practice? Conrad: My world is far less dangerous than Alicia's, although we do share love for Italian culture and a crisp that rhymes with 'Tingles.' We both like researching and analyzing complex legal issues. Warren: The Italophile Book Review recommended MIH for 'Italophiles, Anglophiles, fans of traditional British mysteries, and fans of cozy-murder-mysteries.' Would you agree? Conrad: Absolutely. And I was thrilled when the Readers' Favorite 5-Star Award Review said Alicia 'should be on the top of every woman's reading list.' My fan mail shows AAI readers like strong but not perfect female detectives, and they love the repartee between Alicia and Alex. Warren: Book 1 sends Alicia through London's urban dangers. Book 2 takes her to Australia, and Book 3 spans New York, London, Italy and Sicily. Italian culture provides color and clues. What inspired you to use Puccini in Book 3? Conrad: When I first saw Puccini's opera, Gianni Schicchi, I hoped to use it in a plot of my own, and it did prove most 'handy' in 'Murder in Hand.' Warren: Can you sum up Alicia Allen? Conrad: She's a tough little cookie who will stop at nothing. Warren: And the theme of MIH ? Conrad: Forces of darkness are everywhere. Warren: What inspired you? Conrad: Paul Marsh at the Marsh Agency suggested my experiences could make good novels. Warren: Clues reside in Shakespeare, Italian opera and art. Why the Classics? Conrad: I've always loved the Classics, thanks to my mother who also loved theater. Before she passed away, we read and acted out scenes from the trilogy. Warren: This is a re-launch. Why? Conrad: AAI never had a launch because I was caught up in the losses of my mother and Paul Marsh at the time of publication. Paul thought MIH my best work yet. He said Alicia Allen deserved to find her audience. That support continues to sustain me. BWW Reviews: Walking Shadow's GABRIEL is a Chilling and Captivating Look at a Little Known Facet of WWII History
by Jill Schafer - Oct 7, 2014

As I left the theater yesterday afternoon, I clutched my sweater close around me to ward off the chill. Not the chill in the crisp fall air, but the chill from the play I had just seen - Walking Shadow's GABRIEL. This story about a little known facet of WWII history is so captivating, horrifying, chilling, and completely engaging that it hangs with you well after you leave the theater. The excellent cast and realistic set make you feel like you're right there, as this family fights for survival on a Nazi-occupied British island. It's only playing for one more weekend, but it's well worth it if you can make it. You won't soon forget this beautifully done, powerful play.
