Tom Stoppard's comedic tour-de-force "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" turns "Hamlet" on its head, telling the tale from the bewildered perspective of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare's tragedy. The Old Globe today announced the cast and creative team for the San Diego Premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People, the award-winning play about class divisions in modern-day Boston. Directed by Paul Mullins, Good People will run Sept. 29 - Oct. 28, 2012 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run Sept. 29 - Oct. 3. The Old Globe's 2012-13 Season will feature the World Premieres of two new musicals: Allegiance - A New American Musical by Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. The season also includes George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion in celebration of the classic play's 100th anniversary and the World Premiere of a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House by Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey and Kirsten Brandt. Two recent Broadway hits will make their San Diego debuts at the Globe: David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People and Jon Robin Baitz's Other Desert Cities. Her husband George, an ageing professor of moral philosophy, attempts to rehearse a lecture while ignoring the nearby corpse as his wife entertains his university boss and a chorus of gymnasts from the philosophy department. What follows is a murder mystery thriller displaying Tom Stoppard's verbal ingenuity within an anarchic comical setting of adultery, gymnastics and moon landings. (more...)

The Old Globe Announces 2013 Season - Adrian Noble Directs MERCHANT OF VENICE, THE RAINMAKER and More

The Old Globe today announced its 2013 Summer Season. Adrian Noble will return for his fourth season as the Artistic Director of the Globe's Shakespeare Festival and direct Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice starring Festival veteran Miles Anderson. Noble will also direct Tom Stoppard's classic farce, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Presented in repertory in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, the Festival will also include the perennial favorite A Midsummer Night's Dream. The Summer Season will also feature N. Richard Nash's romantic comedy The Rainmaker and the San Diego Premiere of Double Indemnity, based on the classic novel by James M. Cain and adapted for the stage by David Pichette and R. Hamilton Wright. The Rainmaker will run on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre and Double Indemnity in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, both part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Tickets to the Globe's 2013 Summer Season are currently available by subscription only, and prices range from $66 to $422. Soulpepper and the Young Centre Announce 2013 Events

Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company and General Director of the Young Centre for the Performing Arts today announced a full year's slate of artistic and community-based activity for Soulpepper and the Young Centre in 2013. Over 700 performances representing the remarkable artistic and cultural diversity of the city will happen under the Young Centre's roof next year, including festivals, cabarets, and community partnerships. Soulpepper Theatre Company's repertory season features fifteen plays including two marathon-style theatrical events to be staged in their entirety: Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America (Part One: Millennium Approaches & Part Two: Perestroika) and Alan Ayckbourn's The Norman Conquests (Table Manners, Living Together & Round and Round the Garden). Soulpepper's season includes adaptations of plays from the classical canon (Beaumarchais/Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Schnitzler's La Ronde, and Dickens' Great Expectations) alongside twentieth-century gems by Tom Stoppard, Joe Orton, Sam Shepard and Canada's John Murrell.
