Caroline, or Change takes place in Louisiana in 1963, just before President Kennedy's assassination and during the Civil Rights movement. Caroline is the black maid of the Gellmans, a Southern family, made up of a father, his new wife and the man's young son, Noah. The son's birth mother has recently died, and the stepmother is trying to establish a relationship with the child, who already has a close connection with Caroline. The title has a double meaning, referring to the myriad social changes swirling around the family and a family argument surrounding the spare change perpetually found in the boy's pants pockets.

Tina Landau directs. McCraney, one of America's most acclaimed young writers, returns to The Public to complete his trilogy following the success of The Brothers Size in 2007. Steppenwolf Associate Artist Jessica Thebus (Intimate Apparel, Dead Man's Cell Phone, Sonia Flew) directs. Andrew Resnick (A Civil War Christmas at Long Wharf Theatre) provides musical direction of beloved holiday music supervised, arranged, and orchestrated by Daryl Waters (Tony and Grammy Award nominee for Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk). It has been a good, anti-violence filled week for Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tony Kushner. This past Sunday, November 8, Kushner was presented with the 2009 Chicago Tribune Literary Prize at the Symphony Center. As part of the event, presented by the Chicago Humanities Festival, Kushner engaged with Chicago theater critic Chris Jones in a special Q & A. on politics and violence. The next day, on Monday November 9, Kushner was honored by the New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) during their 13th annual Courage Awards at the W New York Ballroom. (more...)
