Caroline, or Change takes place in Louisiana in 1963, just before President Kennedy's assassination and during the Civil Rights movement. Caroline is the black maid of the Gellmans, a Southern family, made up of a father, his new wife and the man's young son, Noah. The son's birth mother has recently died, and the stepmother is trying to establish a relationship with the child, who already has a close connection with Caroline. The title has a double meaning, referring to the myriad social changes swirling around the family and a family argument surrounding the spare change perpetually found in the boy's pants pockets.

Writers' Theatre Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Executive Director Kathryn M. Lipuma announce the second extension of Oh Coward!, words and music by Noel Coward, devised by Roderick Cook. The production, which began its run in November 2009 is directed by Jim Corti, with musical direction by Doug Peck. Court Theatre proudly announces the company's fifty-sixth annual season, which opens with William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors directed by Sean Graney. The season continues with Samm-Art Williams's Home directed by Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson and Sarah Ruhl's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando directed by Jessica Thebus. Artistic Director Charles Newell, Music Director Doug Peck and Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson will close the season with Gershwin and Heyward's Porgy and Bess. The 2010-11 season's fifth play, to be directed by Charles Newell, is yet to be determined; the complete season will be performed at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue in Hyde Park. (more...)

Hamingson) and Signature Theatre Company (Founding Artistic Director James Houghton; Executive Director Erika Mallin) announced today that the New York premiere of Tony Kushner's THE INTELLIGENT HOMOSEXUAL'S GUIDE TO CAPITALISM AND SOCIALISM WITH A KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES will be presented in the 2010-2011 season in a co-production between The Public Theater and Signature Theatre Company, in association with the Guthrie Theater. Michael Greif, who directed the world premiere at the Guthrie in April, 2009, will direct the New York premiere, which will play March 22-June 12, 2011 at The Public Theater.
