Bay Area Cabaret, the local organization devoted to presenting audiences with top performers who expand the definition of cabaret, announced it has been invited to reopen the Fairmont Hotel's historic Venetian Room as a showroom, and given exclusive music booking rights to present its musical series in the city's legendary showroom. Said Marilyn Levinson, Founding Executive Producer of Bay Area Cabaret, now in its seventh season, 'The Venetian Room reigned supreme as America's premier supper club from 1947 to 1989. It was here that Tony Bennett introduced his signature song 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' and show business legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, Tina Turner, Joel Grey, Bobby Short, James Brown, Vic Damone, Nat 'King' Cole, and many, many other performers held forth for more than four decades. SOUND OFF: GLEE Goes Horror Show

This week we are taking a listen to the soundtrack for the forthcoming ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW homage ala GLEE with a rundown of the second season of the hit Golden Globe-winning musical dramedy series and how it stacks up to last season. Additionally, we take a peek at one of the most famous musicals numbers from the cult classic score - 'Time Warp' featuring all of the central Glee club cast-members of the show, among them Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron and Chris Colfer. The soundtrack also contains a special appearance by John Stamos - late of Broadway's recent Bye Bye Birdie, and the other Roundabout revivals of NINE and CABARET - who sings the song made famous by a then unknown Meat Loaf in 1975 who will be making an appearance himself on the episode when it airs October 26th on Fox. Mutrux's BABY, IT'S YOU Musical Gets New Producers

Variety reports today that the biographical musical about composer Florence Greenberg by Million Dollar Quartet producer and book writer Floyd Mutrux is being prepped for a 2011 Broadway opening. Entitled Baby, It's You, the musical is aiming to open in the winter of 2011, co- directed by Mutrux and Sheldon Epps. Mutrux and Epps also collaborated on the Pasadena Playhouse production in November of 2009. The show premiered at the Coast Playhouse in Los Angeles prior to its Pasadena run. (more...)

Dick Van Dyke Opens New Musical Memoir at Geffen, 12/16

Stage and screen icon Dick Van Dyke will appear onstage at the Geffen Playhouse in Dick Van Dyke - Step in Time! - A Musical Memoir, a world premiere production that highlights the artist's truly scrumptious six-decades in the entertainment industry. The play, which is co-written by Van Dyke and the play's director Joshua Ravetch, is a living autobiography pulling stories and songs from Van Dyke's celebrated career. To help bring the show to life with music, Van Dyke will be joined on stage by Eric Bradley, Bryan Chadima and Mike Mendyke - three young singers who together with Van Dyke form the singing quartet 'The Vantastix.' Step in Time, named for Richard and Robert Sherman's song and Van Dyke's signature dance number in Mary Poppins, will begin in the intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse with previews on December 8, 2010.
