Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then he’s offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his sixtieth birthday.



Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.



Killing my enemies is easy. The challenge is to change the way they think, to control their minds. And I think I controlled yours pretty well. In years to come, I’ll be able to say: Bulgakov? Yeah, we even trained him. He gave up. He saw the light. We broke him, we can break anybody. It’s man versus monster, Mikhail. And the monster always wins.



John Hodge’s blistering new play depicts a lethal game of cat and mouse through which the appalling compromises and humiliations inflicted on any artist by those with power are held up to scrutiny.



Following its successful run in the Cottesloe Theatre, Collaborators is transferring to the Olivier Theatre on April 30 for a limited run.

The age-old tradition of matchmaking takes a contemporary twist in San Jose Repertory Theatre's world premiere of Love in American Times, by Philip Kan Gotanda. Love in American Times is directed by San Jose Rep's Artistic Director Rick Lombardo, and will run from May 12 through June 5, 2011. Press Opening Night is Wednesday, May 18 at 8 p.m. Proceeds of the company's iconic 'Pay What You Will Night' on Thursday, May 12, will benefit victims of the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Disasters.

Momenta Quartet Announces May Line-Up

Currently in its seventh and most prolific season, with 18 concerts, 12 premieres and collaborations with 21 living composers, the Momenta Quartet continues a strong spring indicative of its innovative programming; stylistically diverse and international in scope. After concerts and residencies at Rutgers University, Haverford College and Cornell University in March with acclaimed Indonesian vocalist Nyak Ina Raseuki (aka Ubiet), Momenta launches into May with two world premieres by Chinese American composer Jason Kao Hwang and a Koussevitzky commission by leading Chinese Malaysian composer Kee Yong Chong; a western premiere by Balinese composer Wayan Gde Yudane and New Zealand composer Jack Body as well as delving into the world of Mexican microtonal maven Julián Carrillo. This spring marked the first time in its history that Momenta has brought international collaborators to the United States in the form of Ubiet and Chong.

Red Thread Theater premieres 'Facing the Minotaur' June 3 - 4, 2011 at The Spoon Theater, 38 West 38th Street, New York City. This newly devised work was created by an ensemble process designed to uncover autobiographical material with transformative potential. James Baldwin once wrote that 'Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.' In 'Facing the Minotaur', an ensemble of six directed by Julie Rosier, interweaves three real life journeys of courageous self-confrontation by ensemble members DR Mann Hanson, Quai Nystrom and Kimberly Shelby-Szyszko.
