The United States is the world's leader in incarceration. Statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Justice show that there are 2.2 million people currently in U.S. jails or jails, a 500 percent increase over the past 30 years. Recidivism rates are equally dismal: in April 2014 the Bureau of Justice released results of a study that tracked 404,638 state prisoners from 30 states who were released in 2005. It found that 67.8 percent of them were re-arrested within three years of their release and 76.6 percent were re-arrested within five years.
