BWW Review: Actors Co-op Sizzles with SUMMER AND SMOKEBWW Review: Actors Co-op Sizzles with SUMMER AND SMOKE
by Don Grigware - Mar 7, 2016

Tennessee Williams published Summer and Smoke in 1948 and revised and rewrote it in 1964 as The Eccentricities of a Nightingale. Summer and Smoke is the popular, much revived version despite the fact Tennessee himself among many critics considered the second version to be the most lyrical representation of Miss Alma, the Spanish word for soul. In both plays singer/music teacher Alma Winemiller (Tara Battani), daughter of an Episcopalean minister (Jeffrey Markle), is passionately in love with her neighbor young Dr. John Buchanan (Gregory James) and when that love is gradually unrequited rather than become a miserable spinster, after a long struggle of illness and isolation, she turns to prostitution. In a handsome production of Summer and Smoke at Actors co-op, Williams' debate between the flesh and the spirit, body vs. soul, is still burning with poetic truth after almost 70 years. (more...)

BWW Review: With Class and Clarity, Christine Andreas Brings the Music and Madness of CAFE SOCIETY to Feinstein's/54 BelowBWW Review: With Class and Clarity, Christine Andreas Brings the Music and Madness of CAFE SOCIETY to Feinstein's/54 Below
by Alix Cohen - Mar 5, 2016

In her new show, Café Society at Feinstein's/54 Below, Christine Andreas doesn't so much sing “Puttin' On the Ritz” (Irving Berlin) as personify it, channeling the attitude and era in which it was conceived. With just a tad of hip action, tipping shoulders, and an elongated ssss, the artist shares a really good time. “So, where are we going after the show . . . to Harlem's Savoy or The Copa? (The Copacabana) . . . ” This evening is about the late 1920s to the early '60s “an ongoing party of glamour and excess . . . when everybody was listening to the same music.” (more...)

BWW Review: PBS's MERCY STREET is Chilling, Captivating Look at Civil War WomenBWW Review: PBS's MERCY STREET is Chilling, Captivating Look at Civil War Women
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 18, 2016

With the sixth and final season of beloved British import DOWNTON ABBEY quickly coming to an end, PBS is hoping to hold onto the fans of the early 20th Century soap with new historical drama MERCY STREET. The Civil War hospital series debuted Sunday night after the third installment of DOWNTON's nine-episode season, but beyond their proximity on the network's schedule, the two period dramas have little in common; but that's not a bad thing for either show. Where DOWNTON is mostly a light-hearted look at a wealthy English family and the people who serve them, which only occasionally delves into significantly dramatic fare, MERCY STREET is a bone-chillingly authentic look at one of the most traumatic times in American history that has only momentary flits of humor. by Victoria Ordin - Feb 20, 2016

Jeff Macauley loves Dinah Shore. That's usually the case when a cabaret performer devotes an entire show to a star's body of work. But there's affection and admiration, and then there's all-encompassing passion and adoration that informs the performer's every note, lyric, and anecdote, and thereby imparts that love to us (whether or not we were previously fans). By that standard, MWAH! The Dinah Shore Show, Macauley's 1998 Backstage Bistro Award Winner for 'Outstanding Theme Show' (revived last Saturday night as part of Stephen Hanks' monthly New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits series at the Metropolitan Room--is one of the most successful shows of its kind I've seen. Presidential candidates are not the only ones taking to the debate stage these days. In Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, characters stand and challenge each other, far more diplomatically than our friends running for higher office, on a long list of mathematical, scientific, and philosophical theories. Characters with strong conviction passionately defending those convictions can make for the type of thought-provoking theatre that stays with you long after curtain call.   (more...)
