Music figures prominently in the 2013 Festival with international productions by an eclectic range of renowned composers, singers, musicians and directors. NY PHIL BIENNIAL to Run Through June 7 at Lincoln Center Campus

Cleveland Orchestra Receives $2.5 Million Grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a new $2.5 million grant to The Cleveland Orchestra to support artistically ambitious programming with special emphasis on opera and ballet, as well as collaborations with guest artists. This gift - the largest to the Orchestra in the Foundation's history - supports the type of programming and partnerships that challenge and expand the Orchestra and help distinguish the Orchestra from its peers.

PIPPIN Cast Album in the Works; Ghostlight to Release in June 2013!

Ghostlight Records will release the New Broadway Cast Recording for Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz's beloved coming-of-age musical comedy PIPPIN, which is now playing at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street) and opens on Thursday, April 25. The cast will record the album on April 29. The album will be release in June 2013 (date to be announced) and will feature material from the show never previously recorded. The album will be co-produced by composer Stephen Schwartz and Kurt Deutsch, and executive produced by Howard & Janet Kagan.

New York City Center will present Pacific Northwest Ballet in its first full-company performance in NYC since 1996, February 13-16, 2013. PNB, celebrating its 40th Anniversary season, will present two programs featuring a mixed repertoire of Balanchine ballets and Jean-Christophe Maillot's full-length Roméo et Juliette. Know Theatre and the Cincinnati Fringe Festival have announced a fall mini-Fringe Festival comprised of four encore performances from 2012 Cincinnati Fringe Festival artists! These Fringe encores will feature two returning shows: Audience Pick of the Fringe, On Her Pillow by Honour Pillow of Cincinnati, OH and Producers' Pick of the Fringe, The Screw You Revue by Screw You Entertainment of Olrando, FL as well as two new shows by 2012 Fringe Artists Kevin Thornton and Tommy Nugent. Kevin Thornton (of Nashville, TN) will present Kevin J. Thornton: UNFRINGED and Tommy Nugent (of Detroit, MI) will present OCCUPY This: Tales of an Accidental Activist. In addition, OTR Improv, Know Theatre's house improv team and member of the Jackson Street Market, will also present an encore of their Festival performance.

American Composers Orchestra's (ACO) 2012-13 concert season is a banner year for the orchestra, marked by unprecedented opportunities for composers through three initiatives that illustrate ACO's role as a catalyst for the creation of new orchestral music: CoLABoratory: Playing It UNsafe, ACO's groundbreaking composition and performance laboratory; the 22nd annual Underwood New Music Readings, one of the country's most sought-after programs for emerging composers (DiMenna Center, May 30-31, 2013); and the nationwide expansion of the Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute Readings in partnership with The Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University and The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music (DiMenna Center, June 1-2, 2013).

CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour, former UMass professor and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Chair Sheila Bair, playwright and gay-rights activist Martin Duberman, Iran hostage crisis negotiator Ulric Haynes Jr. '52, chemist David K. Lewis '64, New York Public Library President and former Amherst College President Anthony W. Marx, acclaimed narrative nonfiction writer John McPhee and hit songwriter Jim Steinman '69 will all receive honorary degrees from Amherst College during its 191st Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 20, at 10 a.m. on the school's main quad. Amherst President Biddy Martin will deliver the address during the May 20 ceremonies, and seven of the eight honored guests will speak to the approximately 443 members of Amherst's Class of 2012, their families and friends and the college and Western Massachusetts communities in a series of conversations that are free and open to the public on Saturday, May 19. Ravinia Festival President and CEO Welz Kauffman announced the festival's 2012 season, which offers more than 100 separate events exemplifying most musical genres, including the 77th residency of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
