Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage takes great pride in the survival of black women through the ages. In her Pulitzer winner Ruined, it's how Congolese women have survived civil war, in her newest By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, it's blacks' struggles in the acting profession, and in Intimate Apparel, her most widely known play, it's a black seamstress who must fight for recognition and love at the turn of the 20th century. Now onstage in a handsome revival at the Pasadena Playhouse, Intimate Apparel has taut direction from Sheldon Epps and a stellar cast led by luminous Vanessa Williams as Esther. (more...)

DANCE MOMS' 2013 Premiere Scores Series High with 2.8 Million Viewers

After locking up its strongest year-on-year growth among the key demographics in 10+ years in 2012, the curtain opened on Lifetime's New Year in true fashion last night when the 90-minute season three premiere of its hit docusoap Dance Moms, starring Abby Lee Miller, hit a series best 2.8 million Total Viewers, a +33% jump versus the program's Summer 2012 season premiere in June. In the first of 26 episodes this season, Dance Moms also averaged 1.4 million Adults 18-49 viewers (+27%), 1.3 million Adults 25-54 viewers (+45%), 1.1 million Women 18-49 viewers (+26%) and 999,000 Women 25-54 viewers (+41%), with a 1.9 Household rating (+19%), according to Nielsen Research. The Metropolitan Opera's 2013-14 season will feature many of the world's greatest singers, conductors, and theater artists in 26 operas, including six new productions, of a varied repertory that ranges from the Baroque era to the 21st century. Met Music Director James Levine will return to the Met podium for the first time in two years, conducting three operas with which he has long been associated: a new production of Verdi's final masterpiece Falstaff, Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, and Berg's Wozzeck. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi will be conducting two operas in the 2013-14 season, Rossini's La Cenerentola and Puccini's Madama Butterfly. (more...)

Hanes and The Salvation Army Launch Fourth Annual Sock Drive

Hanes® announced its fourth annual sock drive to bring comfort in the form of half a million socks to those who need it most. Kicking off the national sock drive efforts, Hanes will host a live event today in partnership with The Salvation Army providing socks and food to those in need on Los Angeles' Skid Row. The LA sock drive will be joined by homeless advocate Mark Horvath, who helps distribute Hanes socks throughout the year to those affected by homelessness as part of his mission to bring a face to the growing issue. The choices I have made are based solely on the plays and performances that I actually saw. I cannot see all the great talent that is out there in LA; it is physically impossible, as there exist far too many theatre/cabaret performances for one person to cover. So if a choice of yours is not on my list, chances are, I did not see that play or performance...or, it just did not make the final cut. I also do not separate Equity from Equity waiver; I consider all the productions/performances I select to be of top-of-the-line quality/professionalism. (more...)
