The Lee Reynolds Award is given annually to a woman or women active in any aspect of theatre whose work for, in, about, or through the medium of theatre has helped to illuminate the possibilities for social, cultural, or political change. The 2010 Lee Reynolds Award will be presented to Lynn Nottage, an outstanding American dramatist. In 2009, she received the Pulitzer Prize for Ruined, which dramatizes the horrific injuries inflicted on women during war, an issue about which Ms. Nottage has frequently spoken publicly. She has also received the MacArthur 'genius' award for the total body of her work, which includes the plays Intimate Apparel, Fabulation, Crumbs from the Table of Joy, and Las Meninas. Most recently she received the inaugural award of the Steinberg Prize for Playwriting. Her new play, By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, will have its premier at Second Stage Theatre in 2011. (more...)

The New York Times says, 'ROMEO AND JULIET is a play of enormous, reckless passions - clans feud, friends quarrel, and lovers swoon. Here, those passions are met head-on, and with real skill.' The Minneapolis Examiner claims, 'This ROMEO AND JULIET transcends its classic status by portraying its fated lovers as two swept up in a romance that leads from the heart and not from the head. In THE NANJING RACE, Philip (Marcus Ho), a gay Japanese-American businessman, visits Nanjing China in 1988. Yu Ahn (Ian Wen), a hotel 'floor-boy' befriends Philip in the hope of being sponsored to go to America. But it is Bao (James Chen), another floor-boy, who intrigues Philip. Trapped in their social and racial identities, the three men struggle to come to terms with their desires and prejudices. Scenes highlighting Ms. Nottage's work (including Ruined, Intimate Apparel and a preview of her upcoming By The Way, Meet Vera Stark) were performed by actors Quincy Tyler Bernstine (In the Next Room), two-time Tony Award-winner and Oscar-nominee Viola Davis (Fences, King Hedley II), Kimberly Hébert Gregory (The Brother/Sister Plays), Russell Hornsby (Intimate Apparel), Tony Award-winner Karen Olivo (West Side Story, In the Heights) and Condola Rashad (Ruined).
