The third New York Philharmonic Young People's Concert (YPC) of the 2010-11 season will take place Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., led by Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Daniel Boico. The concert will focus on the Romantic era as part of the season's theme, "The Ages of Music," which explores the four major periods of orchestral music. Philharmonic Director of Education Theodore Wiprud is the host of the series, designed for youngsters 6 to 12 years of age, with programs written and directed by Tom Dulack. This concert will feature violinist Erno Kallai - one of four young violinists who are appearing as soloists on the YPCs this season - and actors Adam Alexander and Alesia Lawson. (more...)

New York City Opera's General Manager and Artistic Director George Steel will moderate an in-depth roundtable discussion on what defines the opera and musical theater genres at the Gershwin Theatre on the set of Stephen Schwartz's acclaimed Broadway production Wicked. He will be joined by a panel of distinguished composers and playwrights including Stephen Schwartz, Rufus Wainwright (composer and performer), Adam Guettel (composer of Floyd Collins and The Light in the Piazza), John Kander (composer of Cabaret and Chicago) and David Henry Hwang (librettist for operas such as Alice in Wonderland and The Fly, playwright of M. Butterfly, book for Flower Drum Song, Tarzan and Aida on Broadway). The evening includes cocktails at sunset, followed by a showcase of South Florida's finest musical talent and culinary delights. Dubbed Divas Under Glass: A Cabaret Feast for the Senses, the event will be held at West Palm Beach's new Lake Pavilion, the beautiful glass structure on Flagler Drive's Waterfront Promenade on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, starting at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $300 per person and include cocktails, a dinner 'by the bite' and a dessert buffet. Proceeds will benefit Florida Stage. Dress is 'glamorous casual.' The New York Times reports today that following his stint in DRIVING MISS DAISY, James Earl Jones will be hanging around Broadway a bit longer, assuming the role of Arthur Hockstader in the revival of Gore Vidal's 'The Best Man.' The production is scheduled to open in the spring of 2012. Orphan's Home Cycle director Michael Wilson will helm the revival. Since Theatre Development Fund (TDF), the not-for-profit service organization which runs the TKTS Discount Booths, released the The Official TKTS iPhone app last December, it has become one of the most downloaded New York theatre apps in the iTunes App Store. It is still available free of charge through March 1 (after March 1 downloads will cost $0.99). Today, theatre lovers with Android devices will be able to get the same TKTS information with the launch of the TKTS Android app which lets TKTS customers know, in real-time, what shows are available at all three TKTS Discount Booths - Times Square, South Street Seaport and Downtown Brooklyn. Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater is pleased to announce that it will launch the national tour of Second Stage Theatre's production Let Me Down Easy. This one-woman production, which is conceived, written and performed by Anna Deavere Smith (Nurse Jackie, Fires in the Mirror) and directed by Leonard Foglia (Broadway's Thurgood) and was named one of Entertainment Weekly's Top 10 of 2009, is 'a continually engaging and engrossing collection of testimonials' (The New York Times) that explores the fragility of the body and the resilience of the spirit. The third New York Philharmonic Young People's Concert (YPC) of the 2010-11 season will take place Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., led by Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Daniel Boico. The concert will focus on the Romantic era as part of the season's theme, "The Ages of Music," which explores the four major periods of orchestral music. Philharmonic Director of Education Theodore Wiprud is the host of the series, designed for youngsters 6 to 12 years of age, with programs written and directed by Tom Dulack. This concert will feature violinist Erno Kallai - one of four young violinists who are appearing as soloists on the YPCs this season - and actors Adam Alexander and Alesia Lawson. (more...)
