April 19 and 20, 2012, EarShot (the National Orchestral Composition Discovery Network) and the San Diego Symphony (SDS), Jahja Ling, Music Director, will present the San Diego Symphony New Music Readings at Copley Symphony Hall (750 B Street, San Diego). On Friday, April 20 at 10am, the public will have the opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing brand new orchestral works to life, as music by the four selected composers is read by the San Diego Symphony under the baton of guest conductor, James Feddeck. The composers-Paul Frucht, David Garner, Adam Greene, and Chen-Hui Jen-were selected through a national call for scores, which included over 250 applications. Two of the composers have strong ties to San Diego: Greene is an alumnus, and Jen is a current graduate student at University of California, San Diego (UCSD). During the Readings these young composers will receive feedback from mentor composers Robert Beaser, Rand Steiger, and John Corigliano, the conductor, and SDS principal musicians.

Lewis '64, New York Public Library President and former Amherst College President Anthony W. Marx, acclaimed narrative nonfiction writer John McPhee and hit songwriter Jim Steinman '69 will all receive honorary degrees from Amherst College during its 191st Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 20, at 10 a.m. on the school's main quad. Amherst President Biddy Martin will deliver the address during the May 20 ceremonies, and seven of the eight honored guests will speak to the approximately 443 members of Amherst's Class of 2012, their families and friends and the college and Western Massachusetts communities in a series of conversations that are free and open to the public on Saturday, May 19. Caitlin Mathes, mezzo-soprano of Dayville, Connecticut, won the $15,000 First Prize in the finals of the 2011 Lotte Lenya Competition, held on April 16, 2011, at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. Instead of awarding Second and Third Prizes, judges presented three equal prizes of $8,000 each to Jing Lin, soprano, of Putian, China; Emma Sewell, soprano, of London, England; and Jacob Lewis Smith, bass/baritone, of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Three-time Tony Award-winning scenic designer ROBIN WAGNER and esteemed costume designer LEWIS BROWN are among the 2011 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards recipients. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Friday, April 8 at 6:30pm at the Hudson Theatre (145 West 44th Street). Mr. Brown was selected to receive the 2011 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design, and Tony Award-winning scenic designer Robin Wagner will receive the Robert L.B. Tobin Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatrical Design. Sadly, Mr. Brown passed away in January of 2011. His award will be accepted by his long-time colleague and friend, Albert Wolsky, who was the recipient of the 2010 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award
