Broderick and Lonergan Talk THE STARRY MESSENGER And Friendship At The 92nd Street Y Tonight, 9/30

Matthew Broderick and Kenneth Lonergan have been friends since high school. They worked together before on the film You Can Count on Me, which Lonergan wrote. A high school trip to the Hayden Planetarium is the inspiration for Lonergan's new play, The Starry Messenger, about to open Off-Broadway at The New Group and starring Broderick. The two talk about their friendship and their first stage collaboration tonight at the 92nd Street Y. (more...)

1st Irish 2009, New York's all-Irish theatre festival, hosted its awards ceremony last night, at a cocktail reception at Hudson Terrace, 621 West 46th Street. Sebastian Barry's 'The Pride of Parnell Street,' which runs through Sunday at 59E59 Theaters, was the big winner, earning best production, as well as the best actress honor for Mary Murray. The New Group will presents the world premiere of The Starry Messenger written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan as the first production in its 2009-2010 season. This production plays a limited Off-Broadway engagement from October 26 - December 12 at The New Group @ Theatre Row, with Official Opening Night now set for Monday, November 23 at 8:00 PM. This delayed opening is due to a last minute cast change (Merwin Goldsmith replaced Jonathan Hadary) as previously reported. (more...)

In celebration of this much anticipated opening, the organization hosted an all day community event with the help of Broadway legend Bernadette Peters that featured free music and dance performances, leading up to the inaugural Target Free Thursday performance, Sexteto Roderiguez and the Cuban-Jewish All Stars at 8:30pm.
