It’s the opening night of The Golden Egg on Broadway, and the wealthy producer Julia Budder is throwing a lavish party in her lavish Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a group of insiders have staked themselves out to await the reviews. The group includes the excitable playwright; the possibly unstable wunderkind director; the pill-popping leading lady, treading the boards after becoming infamous in Hollywood; and the playwright’s best friend, for whom the play was written but who passed up this production for a television series. Add to this a drama critic who’s panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town aspiring singer, and you have a prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre—and for comedy. But don’t worry: This play is sure to be the hit they have all been hoping for.

For playwright Beth Henley, tragedies, disappointments and scandal become the surprisingly funny source material for this slice-of-dysfunctional-life play that revels in its own charming eccentricities. The resulting work of delicious genius is her 1981 Pulitzer Prize-winning debut comedy CRIMES OF THE HEART, now playing at South Coast Repertory thru June 6. Centering on the seemingly endless rampage of struggles for the Magrath sisters, this hilarious revival is a wickedly sweet, confectionary delight.
This spring, at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, romance unfolds in a new musical wound around the love songs of the landmark album Girlfriend.

The Seattle Rep comes full circle in their relationship with the work of August Wilson by remounting the first Wilson play they produced back in 1986, "Fences". And the show, now celebrating it's 25th anniversary, shows no sign of age or waning relevance.

What better way to celebrate spring than the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and two Little League coaches going head to head in what has to be the only baseball play to include Brigadoon, living in a van, and the fine art of equipment bag stuffing. Baseball buff Don, for whom winning is the only thing, is stuck with assistant coach Michael, who wants trophies for everyone, and whose only youth sport was, uh, well, curling. In Canada. The result is an exploding scoreboard worth of laughs.
