Sabrina Aloueche, Gina Beck, et al. Set for NIGHT FOR JENNIFER Gala, October 31Sabrina Aloueche, Gina Beck, et al. Set for NIGHT FOR JENNIFER Gala, October 31
by BWW News Desk - Oct 31, 2011

ĎA Night For Jennifer - West End' is a one-off charity gala concert in aid of Jennifer Charity, taking place at the Lyric Theatre - Shaftesbury Avenue, in the heart of London's West End on Monday 31st October 2011. Jennifer Charity was founded by James and Graham Edgington, father and son, following the death of Jennifer in 1985. Graham was left as a single parent of a 16 month old baby and not only did he have the pressure of bringing up James alone, he had to find his own time to grieve and work a full time job. Twenty-five years later James has extensively researched widowed fathers and was alarmed at the lack of supportive organisations aimed at widowers in particular. There are exceptional bereavement charities and organisations helping single parents often single mothers but nothing for men. James decided that he wanted to set up this charity as a support mechanism for widowed fathers and of course, importantly, the children affected by these circumstances. (more...)

The Vagabond Players opened Godspell Oct. 14, nearly simultaneously with the Broadway revival's preview, which leads up to an official Nov. 7 debut (the Vagabond Players have stated, in fact, their gratefulness for not having the rights to the production pulled). In the Vags' intimate, historic space, the production takes on a very participatory quality that-in its hugeness-breaks right through the fourth wall and draws the audience in. (more...)

BWW JR: GODSPELL- Pop Culture Meets Ancient ParableBWW JR: GODSPELL- Pop Culture Meets Ancient Parable
by Erin Leigh Peck - Oct 31, 2011

Godspell is best when it wears its heart on its sleeve. That's not necessarily a comment on this most recent revival of Steven Shwartz's classic theatricalized telling of the Gospel According to Matthew, it's what's written into the soul of the script. With all the permission you are given to explore, create and improvise while doing a production of Godspell, this material shines brightest when it's left alone and allowed to breathe. Strong singers, a company of connected actors moving as one and those gorgeous, Steven Shwartz songs are what can make moments memorable for an audience of Godspell. When those moments happen (and they do happen in this production, most notably at the top of Act II and during my favorite song, 'Day by Day'), you understand why this once progressive and experimental musical has become a classic. Often funny, intentionally self-aware and full of enough shtick to entertain even the sulkiest tween, Godspell sells itself best when it stops trying to....well...sell itself. (more...)

Exclusive InDepth InterView: Lin-Manuel Miranda Talks BRING IT ON, MERRILY, HEIGHTS, HAMILTON & MoreExclusive InDepth InterView: Lin-Manuel Miranda Talks BRING IT ON, MERRILY, HEIGHTS, HAMILTON & More
by Pat Cerasaro - Nov 3, 2011

Pioneer, innovator and the voice of an entire new musical theatre generation coming in the dawning of the age of GLEE, Tony Award recipient and Grammy-winning composer, lyricist and performer Lin-Manuel Miranda has merged the worlds of the two most significant of original American art forms - musicals and rap - in such a striking and surprisingly inventive way with his hit musical IN THE HEIGHTS - currently touring the country - and is setting out to do the same with his fresh collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning NEXT TO NORMAL composer Tom Kitt on their new musical BRING IT ON!, currently in previews out of town in Los Angeles as it eyes New York. In addition to discussing the development of IN THE HEIGHTS and BRING IT ON! in detail, Miranda and I also outline his experience working alongside the two modern-day masters of the musical theatre - Stephen Sondheim and the recently deceased Arthur Laurents - on the Spanish translation and new lyrics for the recent bilingual revival of WEST SIDE STORY - in addition to his forthcoming ALEXANDER HAMILTON project, which Miranda recently performed a medley from for President Obama himself at the White House Poetry Jam. As if all of that were not enough, we also delve into his thought process as he sets out to take on one of Sondheim's most challenging roles in all of musical theatre - that of Charley Kringas in MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG at Encores!, under the direction of James Lapine. Plus, news on his new feature film THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN, as well as recollections of his fondest Broadway shows, scores, cast albums, movie musicals and general musical and theatrical inspirations - and his favorite Shakespeare plays, too - as well as much, much more!
