Today, in honor of the DVD release of Rob Marshall's film version of the 1982 Tony-winning Best Musical NINE, Maury Yeston was gracious and generous enough to grant me a few hours in which I could ask him intimate questions about his life, career and the future of theatre itself. In a private ceremony in the oval office of the White House, Mr. Tune received this honor to add to his already unprecedented nine Tony Awards in four different categories plus, among other accolades, eight Drama Desk Awards, two Obie Awards, two Astaire Awards, the American Dance Award, the Drama League Award, and the George Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement.
So far at this evening's Emmy Awards, theater stars Jeremy Piven, Dianne Wiest, Laura Linney, Dame Eileen Atkins and Zeljko Ivanek are among the winners.
The 2008 Fred & Adele Astaire Awards recognizing excellence in dance on both stage and film have announced that nine time Tony Award & two time Astaire Award winner Tommy Tune will receive the 2008 Fred & Adele Astaire Lifetime Achievement at the awards gala slate for June 2, 2008
Thea Sharrock will direct Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine, previewing at the Almeida from October 25 with press night on October 31, running until December 8.
Variety reports this morning that the nine-time Tony-winner is expected to take over the recently closed touring production of Dr. Dolittle, both as a performer and on the creative team.
