BWW Recap: Murphy's Law Rules on THE AMAZING RACE
by Courtney Henley - Mar 7, 2015

Last week's AMAZING RACE episode brought us some season firsts: the first injury (darn those ice skates), first disagreements (it's always the puzzles, isn't it?), and first glimpses at which blind dates are succeeding more than others. Here's hopin' someone forgets their passport or doesn't read their clue so I can yell at them on the internet! (more...)

BWW Reviews: THE HISTORY BOYS at WOOLFE STREET PLAYHOUSE
by haydn haring - Mar 2, 2015

It won't stop raining. Whenever I'm at Woolfe Street, we stand outside, rain or shine and talk. Before a show, on breaks, during intermission and after. We usually discuss the play in question, whether it is a performance or rehearsal. Most of us have worked together. If we haven't worked together, then we've seen each other perform. And we're all local. We're talking about more theatre. There's something ancient about it, especially when its raining. That area of downtown Charleston reminds me a lot of London- kind of industrial- with the cold and the smell of rain. Whenever I'm there (or in any theater really) I feel like I'm a part of something lasting, something bigger than myself. Sierra- the stage manager- usually calls us inside and so it goes. Anyway, its familiar. And its raining. (more...)

BWW Reviews: JOEY ARIAS Presents A Sympatico Centennial Tribute to Billie Holiday at Lincoln Center's American Songbook
by Alix Cohen - Feb 27, 2015

Vocalist Joey Arias is not what he appears to the uninitiated. This is not a drag performer executing pastiche, but rather an artist serious about music with the talent to offer a full-blooded show. Lifelong affinity for Billie Holiday first professionally surfaced in 1987's Recording Arias on Holiday and continued with the Off-Broadway run of Strange Fruit, an homage to the icon. Her concert Wednesday night for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, with evocative musical arrangement by Matt Ray, brings Arias' devotion "all the way from downtown above 14th Street." BWW Reviews: MACDEATH by Cindy Brown
by Michael T. Mooney - Feb 2, 2015

Ask a theater lover what kind of music they like, and they will invariable say Sondheim or Andrew Lloyd Webber. Ask what they do for fun, and the answer will usually involve tickets to a play. Anyone who recognizes themselves as 'born in a trunk' will want to add Cindy Brown's new mystery novel, MACDEATH, to their reading list. As the title suggests, the light-hearted mystery thriller takes on the venerable Scottish play and the superstitions surrounding the time-worn tragedy. The book is billed as an 'Ivy Meadows Mystery' - the first of a series. Ivy is something akin to a modern day Nancy Drew - an eager young actress turned sleuth in modern-day Phoenix, Arizona.
