Spring is in the air and the announcement of the 2011 Tony Awards nominations last week is still the hottest news in the theatre community. Topping the list for the most nods was none other than God's favorite musical: THE BOOK OF MORMON, making it more impossible than ever to snag tickets to this season's big draw. London import WAR HORSE has also been enjoying weeks of sold-out houses, which is unlikely to change after earning 5 nominations last Tuesday. And though this year's Tony hype didn't effect them, Broadway staples WICKED and THE LION KING are still going strong, filling their respective theatres on a weekly basis. (more...)

by BroadwayGirl NYC - May 12, 2011

It's Tony Awards Season again, and I've been pondering the things about theatre that I appreciate the most. Surely, score and libretto and scenery and (of course) acting. But what about the ensembles, the special effects, the fight scenes, and the on-stage chemistry of so many sexy couples? Sure, the Tonys can't cover EVERYTHING. But the shows deserve accolades for more than just the traditional Tony honors. So I present to you my 2011 Alternative Awards -- aka Tony categories that SHOULD exist -- for the 2010-11 Broadway Season. (more...)

Review - The Book of Mormon: Not Since KwaminaReview - The Book of Mormon: Not Since Kwamina
by Ben Peltz - Apr 18, 2011

'Cute' is probably not the adjective that Robert Lopez, Matt Stone and Trey Parker were going for when they co-authored the book, music and lyrics of The Book of Mormon.  Neither is 'cute' a word I'd expect to use when describing a musical where genital mutilation and the belief that having sex with an infant will cure an adult of AIDS figure significantly in the plot and the big Act I showstopper has a chorus of villagers happily singing, 'Fuck you, God!'  But The Book of Mormon - which absolutely should be praised for its non-traditional material that, to borrow what Brooks Atkinson wrote of Pal Joey, attempts to draw sweet water from a sour well - sets us up for intriguing social satire and then settles for being well-structured, sharply mounted, terrifically performed innocuous entertainment.
