BWW Recap: 'Life's a Shipwreck' on BOARDWALK EMPIRE
by Jessica Naftaly - Oct 6, 2014

BOARDWALK EMPIRE came in strong this week with assassination attempts, affairs, pregnancies and cockroaches galore! The fifth episode of BOARDWALK's final season entitled 'King of Norway' was one of the best of this season as we had some real movement and development. One of the biggest issues I had with the last four episodes was that as we neared the halfway mark of the last season, there was still no clear direction or driving force for the season. We had through line connecting all the dots and pointing us to what to expect coming forward and now, we're finally laying the groundwork for the real major plot points of the season. More than halfway there, it seems like these last four episodes were one big premiere episode, laying the groundwork for the actual season. (more...)

BWW's Brightest Moments on Broadway: Show-Stopping Numbers from Musicals Now Playing
by BWW Special Coverage - Oct 20, 2013

The task of wrapping up a musical involving Ugandan warlords, closeted Mormons, and amphibious fornication might prove to be rough for the average lyricist - but SOUTH PARK masterminds Trey Parker and Matt Stone have done it nicely with the THE BOOK OF MORMON's 11 o'clock performance of 'Tomorrow is a Latter Day,' and the infamous anthem 'I Believe.' As do KINKY BOOTS' flashy footwear-driven 'Raise You Up/Just Be,' proving everyone loves a good drag queen in six-inch heels, or PIPPIN's big reveal in 'Finale/Magic Shows and Miracles.' (more...)

'All My Sins Remembered' by Georgia Poet Adam Stanley, is Released
by BWW News Desk - May 21, 2014

The new novel, by GA poet, Adam Stanley, released this week by Brief Candlelight Publishing, explores the sometimes dark, and the often wondrous world of growing up in a small, Southern town in the late 1980's, and early 1990's. It's 2009, and the protagonist, Andrew White, finds himself at a Point of No Return. Looking for a way to escape his 20-year obsession with Leigh Mallory, he sweats out a hot July night in a cheap motel room, mulling over his life thus far, and debating whether or not he should continue. At heart it is a love story. In a way it's a love letter to the past, but All My Sins Remembered is also a reckoning with the ghosts of drugs addiction, and mental illness that have haunted several of the characters throughout the years. It explores the guilt we all feel, at leaving others, and being the one that is left behind. It is an eloquent paean to first love, intermingled with all too real instances of the violence and other problematic behavior that pollutes even the most sweet, and peaceful dreams. Definitely a must read for anyone who enjoys a story about the excitement of growing up, and the fear of growing old. It is now available in paperback and e-book on Amazon.com. Adam Stanley has established a large following of readers on several social net working sites such as Tumblr, and Facebook where it has been heavily promoted for the last year. Several of his readers have expressed great anticipation about the release, some having even waited for almost three years to finally get the chance to read it. One fan, Brida Kuhs said: 'I've been looking forward to this book coming out for ages and it's out now - if you want to feel, seriously, give it a go, I've been reading excerpts for a couple of years now and every one has been awesome.' Adam Stanley has been publishing poems and short stories for the last twenty years. Some of his credits include, The Old Red Kimono, The Prairie Schooner, and Chum. He is an amateur musician and music lover, and his works are often imbued with a musicality that he still retains from his days as a rock musician and a student of Classical piano. He lives in rural Georgia. All My Sins Remembered is his first novel. Brief Candlelight Publishing is an independent publisher based in Rome, GA. (more...)

In celebration of its 25 years on Broadway, Cameron Mackintosh brought forth a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA for a North American Tour, now in its Boston premiere at the ornate Boston Opera House. Directed by Laurence Connor, with choreography by Scott Ambler, impressive set design by Paul Brown, Maria Bjornson's Tony Award-winning original costume design, and evocative lighting design by Paule Constable, the show is a visual spectacle that has enough magical effects to transport the audience to the Paris Opera House in the late 19th century. BWW Reviews: Singer Blake McIver Shows a New Side to his Talent at Don't Tell Mama
by Don Grigware - Jan 20, 2014

On Thursday January 16 Blake McIver showed a whole new side to his musical art when he premiered selections from his new CD at Don't Tell Mama in WeHo. Set for release in February, the CD is pop, R&B based and is a showcase for McIver's own compositions, many of which are quite poignant, some downright depressing, about his struggles in a journey to find his true self, but there is a ray of hope which permeates throughout with melodious strains of sheer ingenuous expression. What is sad doesn't necessarily come across that way, for much of the tempo is upbeat, big and riveting, like an evangelist at a revival meeting out to save your soul at the eleventh hour. You want to clap your hands, stand up and almost join in the celebration of newfound life. (more...)
