Toronto Symphony Signs New Contract with Chandos Records; SHEHERAZADE Gets First Release

Chandos Records announced today that it has signed a new recording contract with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO). The first TSO recording released by Chandos will be Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade, recorded live at Roy Thomson Hall in June 2013, led by TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian and featuring TSO Concertmaster Jonathan Crow. Two further TSO recordings are planned by Chandos.

The Drama League has announced that the Emmy-nominated star of Modern Family and Broadway veteran Jesse Tyler Ferguson will host the upcoming 80th Annual Drama League Awards. Considered one of the high points of the theater season, the Annual Awards Luncheon includes a nominees cocktail reception, luncheon ceremony, and awards presentation and that will be held today, May 16, 2014 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square in the Broadway Ballroom (1535 Broadway) beginning at 11:30 a.m. Financier Patisserie, GenSpring Family Offices, and National Life Group are the 2014 Event Sponsors of the 80th Annual Drama League Awards.

Detroit Symphony's 'Live From Orchestra Hall' to Stream on PBS' Website

Thanks to an innovative partnership between PBS.org, Detroit Public Television (DPTV) and Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), music from the Woodward corridor will have a larger stage than ever. The DSO's 'Live From Orchestra Hall' series of free HD webcasts will be available to national audiences through PBS.org, beginning with the Feb. 14 live webcast at 10:45 a.m. EST featuring Giancarlo Guerrero conducting and Daniil Trifinov performing Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

With James Levine on the podium, and Thomas Hampson in the title role, Deborah Voigt will make her role debut as Marie in Alban Berg's harrowing opera Wozzeck at New York's Metropolitan Opera (March 6 - 22). The revival of this 'arrestingly abstract ' (New York Times) staging of Berg's landmark opera is highly anticipated, pairing two beloved American singers with a conductor - the Met's music director - who is widely regarded as one of the work's most passionate advocates. The fifth and final performance of Wozzeck this season will be broadcast live on Saturday, March 22 in the Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast series on WQXR 105.9 FM and online at www.wqxr.org. In April, Voigt heads out for a four-city recital tour, taking her to three venues in California and a return engagement in the 75th anniversary season of Boston's popular Celebrity Series. On May 14, she returns to the Met to host the 'Live in HD' broadcast of Rossini's La Cenerentola.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra to Release Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky on 8/6

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Music Director Peter Oundjian will release a recording of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring—in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the work—and Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances on the Orchestra's self-produced recording label, TSO LIVE. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra and TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian's performance of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring was recorded live in December 2008, and Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances in May 2012. Both performances were recorded at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. This is the Orchestra's eighth release in its series of recordings on the TSO LIVE label.
