Frog and Peach Theatre's HAMLET to Play West End Theater, 10/17-11/10
by BWW News Desk - Sep 19, 2013

When Lynnea Benson stages 'Hamlet' with Frog and Peach Theatre Company, it'll be as a face-off between Scandinavian cultures. Bloodthirsty old Scandinavia confronts sleek, modern Scandinavia in a beautifully costumed, paranoid thriller that lets 'Hamlet' live up to its reputation as Shakespeare's most suspenseful play. The production will be October 17 to November 10 at West End Theater, 263 West 86th Street.

Having staged revolutionary interpretations of 'Richard III' in 1996 and 'Romeo and Juliet' in 2009, he is now taking on 'Hamlet' with a new full-length work, 'Hamlet Hallucinations.' La MaMa E.T.C., D'Ambrosi's theatrical home in the USA, will present the work's world premiere October 17 to November 3.

BWW Reviews: Classical Theatre Company's Edward Snowden Inspired HAMLET Works
by David Clarke - Sep 16, 2013

Even after interviewing Classical Theatre Company's Artistic Director and Director of William Shakespeare's HAMLET JJ Johnston, I was highly skeptical about this production. HAMLET set in the post September 11th world with inspiration from Edward Snowden sounded like a gaggle of confused metaphors looking for destruction. For whatever reason, I couldn't wrap my head around this vision for the piece. Walking into the theatre didn't allay those concerns. The set looks more like a modern prison than a castle, with stark grays, dull blues, and a splash of orange in its color palette. Surveillance cameras are positioned along the top of the structure. There are corrugated Plexiglass windows, rivets, rust, and fencing to be seen as well. "Denmark's a prison," says Hamlet to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Act II, Scene 2 of the play, and Jodi Bobrovsky's set design nailed that on a literal level.

BWW Interviews: Classical Theatre Company's JJ Johnston Talks Edward Snowden Inspired HAMLET
by David Clarke - Sep 1, 2013

Mystery, murder, espionage, blackmail, sexual scandal, madness, and a ghost are prized dramatic ingredients. Often when these elements are brought together, the world is plagued by some lowbrow, low budget B movie that airs incessantly on SyFy. However, using these elements, William Shakespeare gifted audiences with HAMLET, his keenly written revenge tragedy potboiler that premiered around the time that the House of Stuart took control from the House of Tudor in England (roughly 1598-1603). Giving what many consider the crowning jewel of drama written in the English language a modern facelift, Classical Theatre Company (CTC) is opening their season with a production of HAMLET that is informed by Edward Snowden and the NSA scandal. Taking time out of his busy schedule CTC Artistic Director and Director of HAMLET JJ Johnston chatted with me about his upcoming production of the cherished title.

Today in 1992, Hamlet opened at Criterion Center Stage Right, where it ran for 45 performances. Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet exacts on his uncle Claudius for murdering King Hamlet, Claudius's brother and Prince Hamlet's father, and then succeeding to the throne and taking as his wife Gertrude, the old king's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother. The play vividly portrays both true and feigned madness - from overwhelming grief to seething rage - and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest, and moral corruption.

I HATE HAMLET Comes to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, 2/5-2/24
by Samantha Vega - Jan 29, 2013

The premise of this incredibly witty comedy is much more about taking chances in life and far less about Hamlet! Onstage at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina this February, this play, which the NY Times called "hilarious," centers around a young, successful television actor who relocates to New York from L.A., where he rents a marvelous apartment in Greenwich Village. With his career in turmoil, the actor named Andrew Rally [played by Ethan Saks] is offered the role of Hamlet. But alas - you guessed it - he hates Hamlet!
