The 2009-2010 season of Reprise Theatre Company continues with Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'Carousel,' January 26 to February 7 at UCLA's Freud Playhouse. Alexandra Silber stars as Julie Jordan, direct from her critically acclaimed portrayal of Julie Jordan in 'Carousel' at the Savoy Theatre in London's West End (TMA Award - Best Actress). Silber is joined by Robert Patteri as Billy Bigelow ('Scarlet Pimpernel,' 'Beauty and the Beast'.) Veteran character actor M. Emmet Walsh appears as the Starkeeper. Michael Michetti, co-artistic director of The Theatre at Boston Court, will direct, with choreography by Lee Martino and musical direction by Darryl Archibald.

A service to celebrate the life of Gerald Schoenfeld, the late Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of The Shubert Organization, will be held on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre (247 West 44 Street) in New York City. Mr. Schoenfeld died on November 25, 2008. A limited number of seats will be available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis at the Majestic Theatre on February 9.

Celluloid Dreams Grabs International Rights for Hoffman's Directorial Debut 'BOATING'

Variety is reporting that Celluloid Dreams has picked Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debut, an adaption of the stage play 'Jack Goes Boating,' which had an award-winning Off Broadway run in 2007. The company has taken international rights to the film, which is an Overture Films release in the U.S.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Makes Film Directorial Debut with 'BOATING'

Variety reports that Philip Seymour Hoffman has picked the film he'll be doing for his directorial debut, Overture Films' 'Jack Goes Boating,' an adaptation of Bob Glaudini's Off Broadway play in which he'll also star. 'Gone Baby Gone' star Amy Ryan will co-star opposite Hoffman, while John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega will reprise their roles from the stage production. 'Jack Goes Boating' premiered at Hoffman and Ortiz's LAByrinth Theater Co. in 2007. Press notes described the play as 'laced with cooking classes, swimming lessons and a smorgasbord of illegal drugs, 'Jack Goes Boating' is a story of date panic, marital meltdown, betrayal and the prevailing grace of the human spirit'.

Callow and Pickup Join McKellen and Stewart for 'GODOT'

Simon Callow (Pozzo) and Ronald Pickup (Lucky) will join Ian McKellen (Estragon) and Patrick Stewart (Vladimir) in Sean Mathias' Theatre Royal Haymarket production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Waiting for Godot will preview at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 30 April with press night on 6 May 2009 and is booking until 28 June 2009 for a strictly limited season. Designs are by Stephen Brimson Lewis and lighting is by Paul Pyant. Waiting for Godot is produced by the Theatre Royal Haymarket Company in partnership with Duncan C. Weldon Productions Ltd. Prior to the Theatre Royal Haymarket run, Waiting for Godot tours to Malvern Theatres (5 - 14 March), Milton Keynes Theatre (16 - 21 March), Brighton Theatre Royal (23 - 28 March), Bath Theatre Royal (30 March - 4 April), Norwich Theatre Royal (6 - 11 April), Edinburgh King's Theatre (13 - 18 April) and Newcastle Theatre Royal (20 - 25 April). Waiting for Godot follows two consecutive days in the lives of Vladimir and Estragon, who divert themselves by clowning around, joking and arguing, while waiting expectantly and unsuccessfully for the mysterious Godot. Beckett's Waiting for Godot exploded on to the London stage over 50 years ago when it shocked as many people as it delighted.

Philip J. Smith and Robert E. Wankel Named New Heads of Shubert Organization

The New York Times is reporting that Philip J. Smith was named today the chairman of both the Shubert Organization and Foundation , a position many consider to the most powerful of all in the theatrical world. Mr. Smith, 77, the organization's president for the past dozen years, is taking over the same job that his longtime friend and mentor. The paper also reports that Robert E. Wankel, was named co-chief executive officer along with Mr. Smith and president. Mr. Wankel, who will turn 62 on Friday, was also elected to the board of directors.
