Harlem sculptor Leah Poller first heard Fred Ho in his performance of the Cal Massey magnus opus symphony "The Black Liberation Movement Suite", presented in its entirety for the first time in jazz history at the 2012 inauguration of Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster Supper Club 'Ginny's'. "The music was soul-rendering, and the performance by baritone saxophonist Fred Ho was mesmerizing", declares Poller. "The sheer bravado, the invention and the scope of this performance shook me to the roots, and I knew I had to meet Ho as a fellow artist seeking to break barriers of preconception of what something should be. Ho pushed the envelope, something I could relate to in my own work." (more...)

The term "art house" takes on new meaning with a special theatrical series of events as NCM Fathom Events, BY Experience and PhilGrabskyFilms.com bring the world's greatest art exhibitions to U.S. cinemas this year. The "EXHIBITION" cinema series will feature high-definition tours of fine art exhibitions created for movie theater audiences beginning with "Manet: Portraying Life" on Thursday, April 11 featuring a career-encompassing collection of the works of Edouard Manet which is currently on exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. The series then celebrates the 150th anniversary of Edvard Munch in "Munch: Munch 150" on Thursday, June 27 as the National Museum and the Munch Museum in Oslo host this "once-in-a-lifetime" exhibition of the greatest number of Munch's works ever. The final exhibition in the series, "Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure" on Thursday, Oct. 10, comes from the National Gallery in London where audiences will see a unique perspective on the masterpieces of Johannes Vermeer. Each cinema event is hosted by art historian Tim Marlow who will go beyond each gallery with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. The series is supported by DSAT Cinema. (more...)

David Daniels and Natalie Dessay will sing the leading roles of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra inDavid McVicar's production of Handel's Giulio Cesare, which premieres at the Met April 4. Baroque specialist Harry Bicket will lead ten performances of the popular staging, originally produced at the Glyndebourne Festival, which incorporates many innovative elements into the story of Caesar and Cleopatra's unlikely romance-including extensive choreography by Andrew George. The other principal stars of this production include Alice Coote in the trouser role of the Roman youth Sesto, Italian baritone Guido Loconsolo in his Met debut as the scheming Egyptian general Achilla, John Moore as the Roman general Curio, and three stars of McVicar's original Glyndebourne Festival production: Patricia Bardon as the Roman widow Cornelia, Sesto's stepmother; Christophe Dumaux as Tolomeo, Cleopatra's brother and co-ruler; and Moroccan countertenor Rachid Ben Abdeslam in his Met debut as the Egyptian servant Nireno. The production features set design by Robert Jones, costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, and lighting design by Paule Constable. The Saturday, April 27 matinee performance of Giulio Cesare will be transmitted worldwide as part of the Met's Live in HD series, which is now seen in more than 1,900 movie theaters in 64 countries around the world.
