Proudly celebrating the dedication, artistry and extraordinary talent of its young musicians, Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO) presents the 2013-14 Concerto Competition winners in its season finale concert this Mother's Day! Under the guidance of Music Director Alejandro Gutiérrez, PSYO is being quickly recognized as one of the most outstanding youth orchestras in the country. The premier training ensemble in Orange County, PSYO draws musicians of the highest caliber from across Southern California—five of whom have been chosen to perform as soloists in this concert. Cellist Matthew Gustafson from Long Beach, tuba player David Freeman from Corona, violinist Sydney Mariano from Irvine and flutists Ramakrishnan Kumaran from Hemet and Gloria Liu from Irvine are highlighted in concertos by Haydn, Vaughan Williams and Lalo, as well as Borne's “Carmen Fantasy.” To conclude, the Youth Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky's stunning Fifth Symphony. Malcolm Gets will join Jennifer Bowles and Rob McClure in the New York City Center Encores! production of Irma La Douce, running for seven performances, May 7 - 11, 2014. Mr. Gets replaces Allan Corduner, who has had a scheduling conflict. The final production of the 2014 Encores! season will also feature Sam Bolen, Ben Crawford, Stephen DeRosa, Zachary James, Ken Krugman, and Chris Sullivan. M. Lindsay Bierman, editor in chief of Southern Living magazine, has been elected chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina. UNC President Tom Ross placed Bierman's name in nomination April 11 during the board's regular April meeting.Bierman, 48, will assume his new duties August 1, succeeding James Moeser, who has served as interim chancellor since John Mauceri stepped down from the post last June. Lately, it seems as if there's been something in the air in the Rhode Island theatre scene. Or maybe something in the drinking water. Something rather dark. There are a number of plays that have just ended, are running currently, or are about to open, which deal with very dark, disturbing or depressing themes and images. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, of course. And no rhyme or reason for why it's so pervasive right now, it's mere coincidence. Still, there's a lot of dark out there right now and it's nice to mix things up with lighter fare, perhaps something along the lines of the delightful production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile, presented by Counter-Productions Theatre Company, which just closed at Ninety-Five Empire. The J?st Project looks forward to returning to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the location where they launched their recording, "Can't Find My Way Home" (Dot Time Records). As part of the Art After 5 series, the Philly-based band will perform on Friday, May 9 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The band is made up of internationally renowned vibraphonist Tony Miceli, vocalist/harmonicist Paul Jost, bassist Kevin MacConnell and drummer Charlie Patierno. This event is free with museum admission, $20; seniors $18; youth, 13 to 18, and students with valid ID $14; children 12 and under free. This spring, the Museum of Arts and Design presents its latest cinema series, Go Nightclubbing Archive, featuring selections from a historic video archive of the burgeoning New York punk scene from 1975 to 1980. In partnership with NYU's Fales Library, which recently acquired the archive, MAD will premiere ten individual screenings that draw from over 200 hours of remastered footage by Emily Armstrong and Pat Ivers. René Magritte, the playful and provocative Belgian Surrealist who set out to create works that would 'challenge the real world' by making 'everyday objects shriek out loud,' is the focus of a major exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago: Magritte, The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938. The show opens June 24, 2014 and runs through October 13, 2014 in Regenstein Hall. A collaborative effort between three museums, the exhibition will make its final stop at the Art Institute following its premiere at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on September 28, 2013 and its current run at the Menil Collection, Houston. On Wednesday, April 16, 2014, the captivating acro-cabaret variety show, ABSINTHE, celebrated its third anniversary at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Following a full standing ovation during the show's finale, ABSINTHE's eccentric producer - The Gazillionaire - took the stage to address the crowd, expressing gratitude for the community's ongoing support of the show. At the conclusion of his speech, the company was presented with a commemorative Spiegeltent-shaped cake onstage featuring The Gazillionaire, his zany assistant Penny Pibbets and her infamous sock puppets, and ABSINTHE's 'Green Fairy' Melody Sweets. In conjunction with the anniversary celebration, the ABSINTHE tent was adorned with red and white LED lights, beautifully illuminating the outside of the venue. Scroll down for photos! (more...)
