Houston Grand Opera Announces 2016–17 HGO Studio Artists

Houston, March 7, 2016—After an international search, Houston Grand Opera (HGO) has chosen three new singers and one new pianist/coach for the 2016–17 HGO Studio. The artists are Yelena Dyachek, soprano, the Ana María Martínez Encouragement Award recipient at Concert of Arias 2016; Zoie Reams, mezzo-soprano, the second-place prize winner at Concert of Arias 2016; Sol Jin, baritone, the Audience Choice Award winner at Concert of Arias 2016; and Peter Walsh, pianist/coach. One of the most respected and highly competitive young artist programs in the world, the HGO Studio provides comprehensive career development to young singers, pianist/coaches, and conductors who have demonstrated potential to make major contributions to the field of opera. The HGO Studio received applications from 475 artists; of those, about 275 were heard in auditions in Houston, New York, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles. For singers, the audition process culminates in HGO's annual Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers, held this year on February 4. (more...)

 Irvington Town Hall Theater in association with NiCori Studios and Productions announces the finale Cabaret on the Hudson for the 2015/2016 season on Sunday, April 10 at 3pm. Cabaret on the Hudson is a series that features outstanding cabaret performers, each bringing a 25 minute sampling of their New York City cabaret shows to Westchester, NY. Many of the performers are Broadway veterans and have performed in New York City venues such as 54 BELOW, the Oak Room at the Algonquin, Birdland, Feinstein's at Loews Regency, Iridium, the Metropolitan Room and Jazz at Lincoln Center to name a few. Cabaret on the Hudson will be hosted by multi-nominated Cabaret singer and host of the Music at the Mansion series, Corinna Sowers Adler and will feature James Horan on piano.   (more...)

Orange County, Calif.—Jan. 19, 2016—Swashbuckling pirates, bumbling policemen, innocent young lovers and an eccentric major-general join in the boisterous fun for Pacific Symphony's next Family Musical Mornings presented by Farmers and Merchants Bank, “The Pirates of Penzance: Opera for Kids!” This campy, comedic morning featuring the popular comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan is sure to send kids off singing the catchy tunes by the famous duo. Favorite songs include “I am a Pirate King!” and “I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.” This production for kids, led by the Symphony's new Assistant Conductor Roger Kalia, is appropriate for all ages, but especially those ages 5-11. It includes costumes, scenic elements and projected visuals, and features both professional singers and talented students from Chapman University. The script was written and directed by Peter Atherton, and the role of the Pirate King is played by Symphony favorite, baritone David Stoneman. (more...)

Fordham University Will Host BEYOND ORIENTALISM Public Forum on Race and Identity in Theatre
