In October 1995, the first production of The 24 Hour Plays took place in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Inspired by Scott McCloud's 24 hour comics (comic books composed in a single day), creator Tina Fallon really only intended the project as a one-time-only event.
Twelve years and three hundred plays later, The 24 Hour Plays have been produced in New York, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Greece. This success has led to the recent collaboration with organizations like The Old Vic and Urban Arts Partnerships, to produce celebrity shows that benefit a variety of worthy causes.
Rover Dramawerks is pleased to present The Best of One Day Only, Vol. 2, featuring fourteen of the best 10-minute plays from the past twelve One Day Only 24-hour play festivals. April is the cruelest - and most hilarious - month at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, when Les Waters lets loose with another shocking script from Martin McDonagh. In 2007, the Obie Award-winning director scored a direct hit with his extended run of The Pillowman; since then, the Academy Award-winning author released his first feature film, In Bruges. Now Berkeley Rep reenlists these seasoned artists for another vicious comedy: The Lieutenant of Inishmore. Staged in the state-of-the-art Roda Theatre, this edgy farce begins previews on April 17, opens April 22, and closes May 17. THE PEARL THEATRE COMPANY is pleased to present the fourth play of its 25 th Anniversary Season; Moli?re's riotous comedy Tartuffe. The production will open March 30, 2009. This wickedly gleeful comedy offers the story of the hypocritical Tartuffe and his designs on the affluent (and painfully gullible) Orgon.
Orgon's family must find a way to break Tartuffe's hold on them before they lose everything - and it won't be easy. In THE PEARL THEATRE COMPANY'S production of Tartuffe, Moli?re's madcap dance of cunning plans and comic irrationality, the question is: what will win the day - blind faith or common sense? 'This translation is Richard Wilbur's masterpeice', says Tartuffe Director, Gus Kaikkonen. In this revival, Kaikkonen plans to explore what happens when an entire family combats each other, all in the name of love.

The Tricycle Theatre will present The Great Game: Afghanistan from 17 April - 14 June 2009, a festival exploring Afghan culture and history through fifteen plays, a ten day film programme, Qawali Sham Sufi Group concert, ceramic and photographic exhibitions, discussion sessions, writers' talks and play readings (in conjunction with the National Theatre Studio). Previews for The Great Game: Afghanistan begin on 17 April with a press day on 24 April. In addition, the Tricycle's Education Department will produce a series of projects to support the Festival.
Eight new productions, four of which are company premieres, will highlight the Metropolitan Opera's 2009-10 season. General Manager Peter Gelb and Music Director James Levine jointly announced plans that include: the Met premieres of Rossini's Armida, Verdi's Attila, Jan?ček's From the House of the Dead, and Shostakovich's The Nose; new productions of Bizet's Carmen, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Thomas's Hamlet, and Puccini's Tosca; and 18 revivals from the company's repertory. The season is the first to be entirely planned under Gelb's leadership, in collaboration with Levine (the past three seasons were planned before Gelb became General Manager in 2006-07 but included some productions, repertoire, and casting changes made by Gelb).
