MetroStar Talent Challenge Takes New Tack for 10th Anniversary

The tenth annual "MetroStar Talent Challenge" is giving itself a fresh, new look as it adds two new categories to the career-boosting competition.  This year, in addition to the MetroStar grand prize and its Special Audience Award (which was instituted in 2015), the 2017 edition of the summer tradition is adding an Innovation Award and a Best New Artist Award.

Grand Park + The Music Center's to Host 4th of July Block Party

For the fifth year, Grand Park and The Music Center will present downtown's largest July 4th party with Grand Park + The Music Center's 4th of July Block Party on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.  Angelenos will enjoy entertainment that highlights the sounds of America featuring Jazz, Funk, Blues and Classical artists with DJ sets inspired by these musical genres.  The day's festivities include a kids' play area; live music performances; L.A.'s best food trucks; a mobile vendor and activity area; and a fireworks show, which will be shot from the roof of The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, set to Pop and Classic hits along with patriotic music, and visible throughout Downtown L.A. and the surrounding neighborhoods.  L.A.'s favorite July 4th block party will cover more than five city blocks from Spring Street to Grand Avenue and from Temple Street to 2ndStreet.

New Big Band to Premiere 7/4 on the Parkway

The new Philly POPS BIG Band will perform its first two shows on July 4 during the Wawa Welcome America Festival. At 10 a.m., the ensemble will play at the City of Philadelphia's July 4 Celebration of Freedom ceremony and parade on Independence Mall. At 7 p.m., the BIG Band will open the city's Wawa Welcome America July 4th Concert and fireworks show on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. NBC10 and Telemundo62 will televise both performances.

Hawaii Symphony Announces Season Finale with Andre Watts

The Hawaii Symphony Orchestra (HSO) concludes its 2016-17 Halekulani Masterworks season with a stellar evening of keyboard fireworks starring world-renowned pianist Andre Watts in performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor on Saturday, June 10 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, June 11 at 4 pm at Honolulu's Blaisdell Concert Hall. Regarded as one of the greatest works in the piano repertoire, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 embodies the composer's signature style with its unabashed Romanticism and the virtuosity demanded of the soloist. Watts, who chose to perform the Concerto for the New York Philharmonic's 100th anniversary, is described by The Huffington Post as having "a generosity and opulence that we associate with times of the past," and who "plays unstintingly, every little passage crafted with love and attention," will hold the audience spellbound.

NY Philharmonic Presents Concerts in the Parks

The 2017 New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer, will return for the 52nd season with four free outdoor concerts, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx (June 13); the Great Lawn in Central Park, Manhattan (June 14); Cunningham Park, Queens (June 15); and Prospect Park, Brooklyn (June 16). In addition, New York Philharmonic musicians will perform at the Free Indoor Concert at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden on June 18, 2017. Major corporate support for the 2017 New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks and the Free Indoor Concert has been provided by MetLife Foundation, Citi, and Emirates Airline.

An orchestral work by the young Igor Stravinsky, assumed lost for over a century, receives its first performance in modern times in St Petersburg on 2 December. Funeral Song (Pogrebal'naya Pesnya) was composed by the 26-year-old composer as a memorial tribute to his beloved teacher Rimsky-Korsakov and, as his op.5, is the missing link between his early Fireworks and Scherzo Fantastique and his ballet The Firebird, written for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, which launched Stravinsky's international career.

Casting was announced today for the HighTide production of Al Smith's debut play Harrogate. Nigel Lindsay joins Sarah Ridgeway, who starred in the original production at HighTide Festival 2015, for the London premiere at the Royal Court Theatre from 20 - 29 October and UK Tour. Richard Twyman, the newly appointed Artistic Director of English Touring Theatre, returns to direct Harrogate, which had an acclaimed sell-out run at the influential annual HighTide Festival in Aldeburgh, Suffolk.
