Impresario Ronnie Malley guides us on an enchanting journey back to 9th century Islamic Spain where we meet Ziryab, a former slave who rose to extraordinary fame in the court of Abd ar-Rahman II to become a polymath in a pluralistic society. This celebration of Ziryab the musician and his worldly contributions are brought to life by lively Arabic melodies, on guitar and oud, strumming a story that will make you want to dance!
Silk Road Rising is at The Historic Chicago Temple Building, 77 W. Washington Street, Lower Level, Chicago, NY.
Experience world-class storytelling, showcasing everything from workshops to staged readings to solo performances to full productions, each story never-before-told on a Chicago stage. At Silk Road Rising we believe that representation begins at home. If we’re to be the representation we want to see, we need to put the playwright first. Which is why the playwrights we produce hail from the Pan-Asian, North African, and Muslim American communities about which they write. The stories we tell reflect unique Silk Road experiences and enable audiences of all backgrounds to find themselves in journeys that are complex, three-dimensional, and full of surprises. After all, a good story well told unleashes curiosity and invites discovery.
