A solitary tree, withered and skeletal, lit by a spotlight and ominous percussion. Suddenly, she appeared, crawling rapidly in a storm and fervently circling said tree over and over again. This arresting display is how Life in Progress commenced opening night at the lush New York City Center, kicking off Sylvie Guillem's final world tour after a celebrated 39-year dance career. As part of the 2015 Next Wave Festival, the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan had its US premiere of the piece Rice on September 16-19 at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House. The company's founder and Artistic Director, Lin Hwai-min, s a recent recipient of the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement, putting him in the same category as other notable choreographers such as Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and William Forsythe. Cloud Gate is the first contemporary dance company in the greater Chinese-speaking community and was founded in 1973 with its name drawn from the oldest-known Chinese dance. Lin, a writer-turned-choreographer, often draws inspiration from Asian cultures and aesthetics in his work. (more...)

Highlights of Festival 2015 include Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host, a special dance and radio stage production starring Ira Glass, host of This American Life; the return of Nederlands Dans Theater 2; the world premiere of American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Daniil Simkin's INTENSIO; Cuban contemporary ensemble Malpaso Dance Company, performing with GRAMMY Award-winning pianist and composer Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble; and the launch of Martha Graham Dance Company's 90th Anniversary, including a world premiere by eminent choreographer Mats Ek.  (more...)

Park Avenue Armory today announced the appointment of Pierre Audi as Artistic Director. A critically acclaimed director and artistic director, Audi will continue to lead the Dutch National Opera, a role he has held since 1988 while also serving as Artistic Director of the Holland Festival in Amsterdam from 2004 until 2014. He previously was the founding Artistic Director of the pioneering Almeida Theatre in London. Audi will join Park Avenue Armory in October 2015 to begin planning its 2017 season. (more...)

The curtain comes down on Pacific Northwest Ballet's 42nd season with its annual Season Encore Performance, a crowd-pleasing reprise of some of PNB's greatest hits.  An evening of thrilling selections and inspired performances, the program will feature PNB's entire Company, along with the mighty PNB Orchestra (now celebrating its 25th Anniversary) under the baton of Music Director/Principal Conductor Emil de Cou.  The evening also celebrates the extraordinary careers of PNB's departing dancers with George Balanchine's Serenade and selections from his Jewels, the local premiere of a work by former PNB Company member Andrew Bartee, a sneak preview of Jessica Lang's The Calling(to be presented as part of PNB's 2015-2016 season) and others.  The Season Encore Performance will be presented one night only, Sunday, June 7 at 6:30 pm at McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer Street at Seattle Center.
