Mercury's 2015-16 Season to Launch with Free Handel's Royal Fireworks Concert

Mercury's 2015-2016 season begins with Handel's iconic Music for the Royal Fireworks led by Artistic Director Antoine Plante on Saturday, August 29 at 8 PM at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. Brimming with exhilarating dance tunes and colorful sonorities, this suite reflects the fire and majesty of one of the world's greatest composers. And as a special treat the night will conclude with a live fireworks display in celebration of Mercury's fifteen anniversary season. Sponsored in part by the City of Houston through the Miller Outdoor Theatre Advisory Board, Mercury's annual free concert at Miller attracts a broad and diverse audience of over 8,000 people from the greater Houston area. Merola Opera to End Summer with Grand Finale Performance, 8/22

SAN FRANCISCO, July 20, 2015 – The Merola Opera Program's Summer Festival concludes with its 2015 artists performing in the Merola Grand Finale Saturday, August 22 at 7:30 pm at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. Conductor Antony Walker will lead the orchestra and 2015 Merola Apprentice Stage Director Mo Zhou will stage the program, featuring works by Gounod, Bellini, Tchaikovsky, Jake Heggie, Nikolai, Verdi, Rossini, Humperdinck, Mascagni, and Offenbach. The performance is a culmination of the 12-week Merola Opera training program, and all 23 of the 2015 Merola singers will perform, under the coaching and direction of their fellow artists. A special artists' reception follows the Grand Finale (tickets sold separately).

Starting Sunday, Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Susan Graham - praised as 'singing beautifully' by Huffington Post for her recent star turn in the Metropolitan Opera's Merry Widow - returns to San Francisco Opera to reprise her signature role of Dido in Berlioz's epic Les Troyens (June 7-July 1). The Associated Press has declared Graham's 'the ideal voice for Berlioz - a mezzo with a dark richness that blossoms into lush soprano-like tones.' The singer will be starring in San Francisco Opera's premiere presentation of the David McVicar production, hailed at its Covent Garden debut as 'a major event' by The Guardian. Graham will perform alongside Bryan Hymel as Aeneas, with Donald Runnicles conducting. Two seasons ago, when the Met broadcast a starry revival of Les Troyens to cinema audiences worldwide in the company's hit Live in HD series, Graham was widely acknowledged as its standout star. The New York Times said: 'The big news is mezzo-soprano Susan Graham ... whose portrayal is sumptuous, regal and impassioned.'

American mezzo-soprano Michaela Martens will make her San Francisco Opera debut as the prophetess Cassandra in the Company's upcoming production of Hector Berlioz's grand-scale opera Les Troyens (The Trojans) on Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 20. San Francisco Opera today announced that Martens replaces mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas, who has withdrawn from the physically demanding role due to pregnancy.
