On Tuesday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m., Elements Theatre Company of Orleans, MA will host a panel discussion, "The Importance of Live Theater in Our Culture: The Art of Making Humans More Human" at Back Bay Events Center (180 Berkeley Street, Boston, MA). Panelists are Jared Bowen, WGBH Executive Arts Editor, Joyce Kulhawik, President of the Boston Theater Critics Association, Julie Hennrikus, Executive Director of StageSource; Georgia Lyman, award-winning actress, and Fr. Thomas Kane, Professor at Boston College. Danielle Dwyer, Elements Artistic Director, will moderate. Panel discussion is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting's Harold Clurman Laboratory Theater Company has announced that Michael Milligan's Mercy Killers is the recipient of The Scotsman Fringe First Award at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Milligan's one-man play is inspired by America's horror stories of the uninsured, many of whom suffer financial tragedies on top of chronic illnesses. The festival performance featured the debut of Mercy Killers outside of the U.S.

The National Asian American Theater Company's solid if unexceptional production of Awake and Sing, Clifford Odets 1935 drama of a struggling immigrant Jewish family in The Bronx, is opening just a few days after the 50th anniversary of the death of Odets

While completing high school together at Hunter in Manhattan, friends Alec Grossman and Rachel Kaly set out to write a play. Today, they have grown into college students, and their play, the aptly-named The Adventures of Boy and Girl, has grown along with them: it is entering its second production at the New York Fringe Festival following a performance in 2011 at the Stella Adler Theater in Hollywood.

Berkshire Playwrights Lab will present a staged reading of Christina Gorman's Far From the Trees, directed by Tim Raphael, tonight, August 21 at 7:30pm at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center (14 Castle Street, Great Barrington, Mass.). New Worlds Theatre Project has announced that it will present the English language premiere of Peretz Hirshbein's Yiddish play, Carcass, beginning Saturday, September 7 at 7pm at HERE, 145 Sixth Avenue. The opening night is set for Thursday, September 12.

New Perspectives Theatre Company (NPTC) has announced DEAD RECKONING, the 6th Annual Women's Work Short Play Festival with three original scripts developed to that theme. The festival runs from Tuesday, August 13th to Saturday, August 17th with performances at 4:00pm and 7:30pm. DEAD RECKONING performs at NPTC Studio, 458 West 37th Street (at 10th Avenue.)

The first comedy under the HBO Films banner in recent years debuts tonight SATURDAY, AUG. 10 (9:00-10:45 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

MALIBU PLAYHOUSE will open its 2013-2014 season with the West Coast Premiere of The Dream of the Burning Boy by David West Read on Friday, September 6th. The play will be directed by Edward Edwards, and stars Broadway veteran Jeffrey Hayenga and Tyler Ritter, the youngest son of the late John Ritter.
