Tonight before a crowd of 1,200 theatre-makers and theatre-lovers at the historic Lincoln Theatre, theatreWashington celebrated excellence on Washington stages at the 2015 Helen Hayes Awards. The awards celebration was a night of excitement and surprise as 57 Washington theatre artists, theatres, and ensembles received honors in 47 categories for their outstanding accomplishments during the 2014 theatre season. Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces the full company for the Washington, D.C. premiere of Christopher Durang's Tony Award-winning comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Helen HayesAward-winning director and playwright Aaron Posner, known for his Chekhov-inspired plays Stupid f**king Bird and Life Sucks (Or the Present Ridiculous), lends his hand to this riotous sendup, which satirizes characters and themes from Anton Chekhov's classics. In this 'sunny new play about gloomy people' (New York Times), siblings Vanya and Sonia live out their days in an endless, bleak tableau in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. All seems numbingly mundane until in sweeps hurricane Masha, their fading movie star sister, with her shiny new boy toy and a big announcement. Creative Cauldron has embarked on its own five-year plan, fittingly entitled 'Bold New Works for Intimate Stages.' Matt Conner and lyricist Stephen Gregory Smith have created and directed a new musical based on Henry James' classic macabre tale, 'The Turn of the Screw. ' The performances here are terrific, beginning with Susan Derry as the governess Miss Giddens.

With performances from 27 shows over the last 25 years, including Sweeney Todd, The Rhythm Club, Urinetown, The Boy Detective Fails, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Dreamgirls, Chess, and many more. On Monday, August 18, the third annual Summer Hummer, a bawdy, naughty burlesque bonanza of more than 60 stars of the Washington stage, will again raise funds to benefit Taking Care of Our Own, a program of theatreWashington.

The concert, which features songs from Broadway and film, will be held tonight, February 28 at 8pm. Dvorsky will be joined by Helen Hayes Award winners Sherri L. Edelen and Christopher Youstra.

How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical with two successful Broadway revivals, will open Olney Theatre Center 76th Anniversary Season playing on the Mainstage January 29 - February 23, 2014. How to Succeed follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who climbs the corporate ladder from window washer to high-powered executive with the help of a little handbook called How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Based on the 1952 Shepherd Mead satire, How to Succeed features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock, and Willie Gilbert. The New York Times says of How To Succeed, 'It stings mischievously and laughs uproariously […] It belongs to the blue chips among modern musicals.'
