In an annual report released today, Canadian Stage announced the company's third consecutive budget surplus following an award-winning and record-breaking season. This year under the leadership of artistic & general director Matthew Jocelyn, managing director Su Hutchinson and board chair Adrian Lang, Canadian Stage saw an increase in new subscribers and audiences under the age of 35; toured productions internationally; introduced a range of new audience engagement initiatives; continued to revitalize the historic Berkeley Street Theatre, and much more. Thomas Adès, the brilliant British pianist, conductor, and composer who has been hailed as among “the most imposing figures in contemporary music” (The New Yorker), will lead the Academy Festival Orchestra in its final concert of the 2014 Summer Festival season at Santa Barbara's historic Granada Theatre on Saturday, August 9. Featuring Stravinsky's dramatic and innovative ballet Petrushka (1947 version) as well as Ives' Variations on “America,” Mr. Adès' own work Polaris: Voyage for Orchestra, and “Four Sea Interludes” from Britten's Peter Grimes, the concert will begin at 8 pm. Canadian Stage today announced details for INTERMISSION, a new event series that combines multiple art forms to create an immersive cultural experience. Taking place once a month from May to July 2014, the series builds on the success of the company's Berkeley Street Block Parties, which have included a 90s-themed dance party with special guest Jason Priestley and a post-show karaoke night with the cast of Venus in Fur. INTERMISSION continues Canadian Stage's tradition of animating the historic Berkeley Street Theatre (26 Berkeley Street) with a variety of performances including live music, contemporary art, tasty refreshments and interactive experiences. The greatest operatic bass in the world today, Ferruccio Furlanetto, makes his Canadian debut this spring in the Canadian Opera Company premiere of the operatic tale of literature's famous dreamer, Don Quichotte by Jules Massenet. Known for an intensely moving portrayal of the title character, Furlanetto stars in this musically lush and romantic homage to Cervantes' iconic hero, Don Quixote. Don Quichotte is sung in French with English SURTITLES, and runs for seven performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts today, May 9 and May 11, 14, 17, 20, 22, 24, 2014.
