Violinist Tessa Lark comes to Pepperdine University's Raitt Recital Hall at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts as the first artist of the New Year in the 2017-2018 Recital Series.

Japanese and Western sounds blend in a dynamic program of contemporary music for shakuhachi, soprano and piano trio.

Houston Ballet announces a tour to Ludwigshafen and Bonn, Germany. From April 3-13, 2017, Houston Ballet will perform three works by Artistic Director Stanton Welch AM: Maninyas (1996), Velocity (2003), and Tapestry (2012). Award-winning French composer and pianist Nicolas Mazmanian will give his first piano recital in North America, French Reflections on the American Dream, at the Colburn School's Mayman Hall in Downtown Los Angeles on Friday, September 9, 2016. The program features Mazmanian's original classical compositions for piano, which invite the audience into a world of fantasy, dreams, and inner romanticism. Mazmanian's accessible melodic music reflects the strong influence of French, Armenian, and American composers.

Mr. Rioult is a compelling storyteller. In 'Iphigenia' - which begins with a glimpse of the gruesome future - he confronts the tragedy head on by making it clear that the designated sacrifice is unaware of her fate. Watching Clytemnestra - Charis Haines, who handily walks away with the piece - batter a commanding Brian Flynn as Agamemnon reminds one that there is nothing so frightening as a mother whose child has been threatened.

The American Academy of Arts and Letters announces that librettist/lyricist Michael Korie will receive the Marc Blitzstein Award for Musical Theater of $10,000. Established in 1965 by friends of the late Academician Marc Blitzstein in his memory, the award is given to a composer, lyricist, or librettist to encourage the creation of works of merit for musical theater and opera. The jurors were John Harbison (chairman), J. D. McClatchy, Shulamit Ran, Augusta Read Thomas, and Yehudi Wyner.
