The first two nights of THE VOICE's Blind Auditions last week, presented us with a lot of ups, but a few uncharacteristic downs from a show that prides itself on having the best singers on reality TV, and the third night wasn't much different. That being said NBC's megahit still provides the most compelling audition process on TV, and makes other singing shows (cough AMERICAN IDOL) look like the minor leagues in terms of talent.

Houston Grand Opera's U.S. premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's The Passenger- the long-suppressed Holocaust opera that Shostakovich declared 'a perfect masterpiece'- earned virtually universal acclaim earlier this year. The Chicago Tribune declared The Passenger to be an 'engrossing, thought-provoking experience,' while the Houston Chronicle praised the presentation for 'ingenious storytelling, potent music, commanding performances and vivid, fast-paced staging.' Now HGO brings the David Pountney production of The Passenger for its New York premiere in three performances- today, July 10, 12, 13 -at the Park Avenue Armory as part of the 2014 Lincoln Center Festival.

SOUL DOCTOR Announces New Partnership with Birthright Israel's Alumni Community

The producers of the new Broadway musical Soul Doctor - about the life and music of Shlomo Carlebach and his unlikely friendship with Nina Simone - have formed an ambitious partnership with Michael Steinhardt's Birthright Israel alumni effort, The Alumni Community, the organization's primary provider of post programming, and the central address for participants when they return home from their Israel experience. The partnership, a first for The Alumni Community, includes the opportunity for 5,000 alumni to see Soul Doctor, participate in exclusive receptions and post-performance talkbacks, and is being underwritten by Mr. Steinhardt, co-founder of Birthright Israel.
