Iconic choreographer Karole Armitage will create the world premiere of On the Nature of Things, a new site-specific dance production about climate change and its cultural context with music by John Luther Adams, Philip Glass, Michael Gordon, Henryk Gorecky, andArvoPärt. On the Nature of Things presents climate change as a voyage of discovery that brings emotion to science.

In a career spanning more than four decades, the contemporary American choreographer Karole Armitage has been celebrated for blurring the boundaries between dance, music and art. Inspired by disparate, non-narrative sources—from 20th century physics, to 16th century Florentine fashion, to pop culture and new media—the classical dance vocabulary, in her hands, is given a needed shock to its system with speed and fractured lines, abstractions and symmetry countermanded by asymmetry.

Michael Gordon's new album Dystopia will be released by Cantaloupe Music today, February 24, 2015. The title piece, a city symphony for Los Angeles, was commissioned and performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The live, uncut LA Phil recording of this world premiere was conducted by David Robertson at Walt Disney Concert Hall in January 2008.

Notably, 2015 will mark the farewell season of Robert Joffrey's The Nutcracker. The Joffrey has commissioned Christopher Wheeldon, whose An American in Paris is Broadway-bound this spring, to re-envision a major new Nutcracker to receive its World Premiere here in December 2016.

New York, NY - Bang on a Can: Beauty Is Power, a concert featuring 'cello goddess' (The New Yorker) Maya Beiser, will take place at the Jewish Museum tonight, January 29 at 7:30pm. Tied to the Museum's exhibition, Helena Rubinstein: Beauty Is Power, the first exhibition about the legendary cosmetics entrepreneur and trendsetting art collector Helena Rubinstein, the performance will highlight powerful women composers. This program is the third concert of the Jewish Museum and Bang on a Can's partnership to produce a series of dynamic musical performances at the Museum from June 2014 to May 2015, inspired by the Jewish Museum's diverse slate of exhibitions.

More Between Heaven and Earth, Salon/Sanctuary's original site-specific music theater piece, directed and with a script by Erica Gould based on the letters of Thomas Jefferson and Maria Cosway, returns to Fraunces Tavern on January 18th.
