People often cite Arthur Ashe as the first African American to win Wimbledon (1975). He was indeed the first African American male to win the men's singles title, but it was, in fact, Althea Gibson, who was the first African American to cross the color lineplaying and winning at Wimbledon (1957 and 1958) and at the U.S. Nationals (1957 and 1958 precursor of the U.S. Open).

The 'I Have A Dream' Foundation (IHDF) today announced that former New York City Mayor David Dinkins will present legendary actress Cicely Tyson with their Eugene M. Lang Lifetime Achievement Award at the foundation's annual Spirit of the Dream Gala. The foundation will also present a Spirit of a Dream Award to an exemplary alumnus of the program as well as a Corporate Award recognizing a key corporation that has supported the charitable organization. The 2015 Spirit of the Dream Gala will take place on June 9 at Gotham Hall in New York City.

If you are a Friar you receive an "Opening Act" email that introduces you to a new member. Sadly, you also get a "Final Curtain" email when a member leaves the stage. In true theater tradition an "After Party" was held for one of the clubs esteemed members in the Frank Sinatra Dining Room last night. It was organized by Actors Fund President and CEO Joseph Benincasa to remember Irv Welzer, a beloved member of the club. With song and story a few of Irv's fellow Friars reminisced. Mayor David Dinkins, Danny Aiello, Bernadette Peters, Dominic Chianese, Mark Simone, Robert Creighton,Carol Skarimbas,Will & Anthony Nunziata, and Stewie Stone all participated in this party, which celebrated a much loved member of the theatre community.

This special event saluting NFT, for 40 years a seminal force in Black Theater, will be co-hosted by Randall Pinkston (CBS News) and Lynn Whitfield. David Dinkins Joins DRIVING MISS DAISY Talk-back, 2/9

Producers Jed Bernstein and Adam Zotovich announced today that former NYC Mayor David Dinkins will participate in Driving Miss Daisy's series of Wednesday night post-performance talk-backs, celebrating Black History Month. Dinkins will join the line-up for the post-show discussion tomorrow (Wednesday, February 9), which also includes CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller, Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, and NYU Professor Martha Hodes. Driving Miss Daisy producer Jed Bernstein will moderate the conversation, which will center around the issues of race brought up in the play. As previously announced, this series continues throughout the month, with talk-backs following all Wednesday evening performances. Upcoming guests include Harold Ford Jr. (February 16), Kathryn Stockett (February 23) and more. See below for a full schedule of participants.

Tisa Chang, Artistic Producing Director of Pan Asian Repertory Theatre continues its 33rd season with CHING CHONG CHINAMAN, a satirical new comedy by Lauren Yee directed by May Adrales. The limited engagement runs April 11, 2010 at the West End Theatre. Recently, Mayor David Dinkins and his wife Joyce took in a production, and visited the cast backstage.
