SMA Presents 'Theater - A View From The Wings' 11/8

For the first time in its 25-year existence, The Stage Managers' Association will host an all-day conference entitled, 'Theater - A View From the Wings: Conversations with Directors, General Managers and Stage Managers' on Monday, November 8th beginning at 10 AM at Connolly's Klub 45 at 121 West 45th Street in Manhattan.

The Tony Award-winning AVENUE Q celebrated its first anniversary at New World Stages yesterday, October 21, 2010. After a triumphant, six-year run on Broadway, AVENUE Q continued its record of unexpected accomplishments last fall when the show's producers made the surprise announcement on the musical's Broadway closing night that they were, in fact, moving AVENUE Q to New World Stages, a mere five blocks away from the Golden Theatre, where the show had delighted audiences of all ages for more than 2,500 performances on Broadway. AVENUE Q began preview performances at New World Stages on October 9, 2009, officially opened on October 21, and continues to play to large and happy audiences one year later. Last night's, Joel Grey-directed, 25th anniversary staged reading of Larry Kramer's ground-breaking play, The Normal Heart was a phenomenal success. The cast featured Glenn Close, Victor Garber, Jason Butler Harner, John Benjamin Hickey, Joe Mantello,Jack McBrayer, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Patrick Wilson in the one-night-only event that benefited The Actors Fund and Friends In Deed. The historic reading took place at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street) on Monday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.

The first major revival of David Hirson's Olivier Award-winning comedy LA BÊTE starring Tony and Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance, Tony and Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce, and BAFTA Award winner (and star of 'Absolutely Fabulous') Joanna Lumley began previews at Broadway's Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street) on September 23, 2010. This immediately follows a limited summer engagement at the Comedy Theatre in London's West End from June 26-September 4, 2010 with opening night of July 7. Rhapsody in Seth, written by and starring Seth Rudetsky and directed by Peter Flynn, is a one-man, multi-media comedy about an obsession with high-belting Broadway divas, Gershwin's 'Rhapsody In Blue,' and growing up in Long Island's North Woodmere. The show traces Rudetsky's childhood on Long Island - where being musically talented was praised, but growing up gay wasn't - all the way to a successful Broadway musical director and comedy writer in New York City.

Mel Brooks has taken a giant tumble off the mountaintop on which he stood following the success of THE PRODUCERS. To think about it, THE PRODUCERS revealed itself not to be one of the greats as soon as Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick departed. Performers mean an awful lot in a Broadway musical. It seems the Brooks machine is willing to trade gifted star performers (they got to be stars for a reason, you know) for a more immediate return of profit. Seems to be unwise for them, and certainly not a reason for the audience to rejoice. But, on to the show.
